As most know the ADdnv virus has hampered alot of cricket farms. Alot are still fighting it but its almost a no win situation. However the virus only affects acheta domesticus.
Some farms switched to gryllus assimilis however i never thought they were a good alternative. I read rumors of them biting and drawing blood. However one company claimed that "true" gryllus assimilis didnt do that. So i ordered a starter colony of 10K and was brave enough to lay my hands on the crate and see if they would. Sure enough they were crawling my hand and did not hesitate to start chewing until they left red marks and a trace of blood.
I now see they are switching to the tropical house cricket Gryllodes sigillatus.
They are used commonly in the UK and now will soon be available here in the US in a few months. I applied for permits to raise and distribute them so I will keep everyone posted on there behavior. I will have my starter colony very soon.
But dont get discouraged there are still some farms that managed to not get the addnv virus. Lets just hope they avoid it cause acheta domesticus are a great all around cricket.
