Hi everybody, my name is Jenny and I'm a reptile lover. But I'm not an owner, its been a long time since I've had exotic pets. I used to have tarantulas! :D I now have two cats and a tank of fish. I was looking into some sort of reptile, primarily geckos, for my next pet. My apartment only allows small animals, but doesn't say how many so I'm sure having a gecko would be fine. X)

So, I have two possibilities, cause I have two tanks. The fish tank, currently occupied, is 20 gallons, more than five small fish need, I could use that. But I've been thinking of donating that old tank to value village because its all scratched up, (its not glass) and buying only glass tanks from now on.

The tank I have I could move them in is 10 gallons. After that though, these little fish aren't going to live very long, and I don't think I want to keep a big aquarium full of fish again, there were too many problems having a community tank. I'll just get a small five gallon. I used to keep betta fish all the time before I got the bizarre idea of doing a colmmunity tank. Not for the faint of heart!

So what about using the 10 gallon for a gecko? Is it the right size or too small? I am projecting down the road when I no longer keep fish so I can start saving money for the supplies I'll need. But if 10 is too small then I'd keep the 20 gallon instead of donating it, since the scratches aren't as problematic for a reptile as they would be for trying to photograph fast moving fish. X) Or I could buy a proper reptile specific tank from one of the local pet stores if that's preferable. But if I already have aquarium tanks I could use! SO many possibilities?

Advice from experts. I don't even know yet what I want, but since leopards seem to be the majority and best for beginners, that would be probably the type of gecko I'd choose. (Although, the leafy gecko species are so adorable!)

Anyhoo, thats my intro post, really just everything in a nutshell. Also, two furry felines in the house, but since they leave my fish tank alone they'd probably leave a gecko tank alone too, they're well trained.

The bigger the better really (not too big like 60 gallons!) but 20 is perfect for an adult leopard gecko.
You'd need to invest in a heat pad (not a lamp!) so they can digest their food c:
You would also have to consider buying the worms/food for the gecko every so often. They get fed every 2 days, or once a week with a mealworm specific dish full of worms in there at all times so they can eat when they desire.

Theres some more stuff people on this thread will be sure to add to my list of things, i'm just going over generally what you'd really need as an essential. Theres temperature requirements and stuff so I'll let someone else get to that

I have 6 leopard geckos, they all have different personalities and are very easy to care fore (hence why i have so many) and they make awesome pets :)

I'm also from Ontario! :main_laugh: Glad to see some more Canadians
