I just finished a grueling band camp today and during the camp, a day or so ago, a young saxophone player approached me.
He had heard from his section that a trombone player kept leopard geckos and came to me. He wanted advice on a leo his friend had given him, tank set up and general care.
We got to talking and I started to get wary: no UTH, only one hide in the tank and the gecko was being fed crickets. Even more worrisome to me was that she apparently was having eye shed problems because he said she had difficulty getting shed off her face and kept her eyes closed.
He had only gotten this gecko 3 days before though from his friend. His friend had also given him his full tank set up.
Today, I finally saw the tank and gecko. This saxophone player was lucky enough to adopt a fully grown female hypomelanstic leo. Beautiful lady. Her tank was so sad though. She was on a mixture of dirt and bark with only one hide and as I said, no UTH. I checked the bulb in the heat lamp that his friend had given him (We live in Idaho, the light helps bring in extra warmth for the lizards during the colder months) and it was just a regular house bulb. No calcium dish.
She also had her eyes stuck neatly together. I cleaned off what I could in what time I had and told him what things he might consider getting her (the first being proper heating). Tomorrow, I am going back to finish up helping this lady and my friend. She doesn't seem to have an infection, and I did manage to unstick her eyes enough for her to see, though they are still droopy, so I'm going to clean them again tomorrow.
I just want to strangle whoever gave this poor kid a lizard he knows nothing about. But kudos to this kid for finding me out and trying to get help for a new pet. Especially a pet which he knew something was wrong with.
Wish me luck in helping out this little lady and introducing this new fellow to the joy of leopard geckos. I will post more on her progress and his too. I'm trying even to convince him to join up here. XD
