New gecko toe issue

Hi guys,

A little background knowledge. I answered a Craigslist ad to rehouse a persons geckos. I took them both home with their setups. I don't think the person was really caring for them very well over all. The water dishes had algae growing in them and neither had a moist hide. One got home and started shedding. I put them in the room for the day (around 10 hours ago at time of post) I went about my business letting them de-stress from the trip. There was regular 60w bulbs in the lights so tomorrow I'm going to pick up red lamps instead as I hear that is the way to go. Around an hour ago I wanted to give each one a visual once over to see if everything was fine.

One is plump, huge tail. Kinda purple-ish colored tail. I checked for any residual shed and think this is just how it is so no worries. Will continue to keep my eye on him obviously. No leftover shed on the toes although they don't look 100%.

Other one still looks fairly healthy but the tail isn't quite as fat. Still big. Sadly his toes seem a bit more funky. Also one had residual shed I thought was just from todays shed. But it looks like it's from past sheds as well because it just won't come off, is kind of black-grey and looks a bit swollen.

I admit I should of given them a visual exam there but even so I probably would of taken them anyway. These are my first lizards in at least 10 years and I wanted to rehome instead of buy from pet store. They're both supposedly males but I just looked up how to sex them and will verify later. Regardless they aren't sharing a setup.

I put him in a small tub of warm water and tried to remove it. A bit more of the new shed came off but it seems like it's still black-grey perhaps half way/a quarter. I'm a little upset, not going to lie. Going to make some moist hide boxes tonight.

My wife will take a photo of the tail just to be sure and of the other dudes toe so you guys can give me further advice. The camera is charging. No idea where my phone is as usual lol.

We are calling the purple tailed one Sunset and the brown tailed one Sunrise. Completely useless information I figured I'd share.

Thanks for helping out some geckos that were clearly in need of a new and better home. Definitely brush up on caresheets/husbandry and make sure you're getting them set up appropriately. For heat, most folks will now recommend an under tank heating pad regulated with a thermostat rather than a bulb that is on all the time. Some geckos seem to react poorly to red light 24/7.

Continue the soak/humidity treatments to help with the stuck shed, but I suspect she may lose that toe at this point. :( In most cases, the toe just drops off without complications, but certainly watch the foot for more swelling or redness that could indicate an infection. She appears to have at least one more stubby toe, so she may have gone through this before.

As for the big tail, to me it looks like a regenerated tail; the gecko dropped off the original tail at some point and it grew back in the more bulbous shape.

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply and help my new little buddies! I was reading on various sites and some said heat pad, some said red bulb. But I shall go pick up the heat pads tonight :). I'll get a red bulb for my other lamp just to turn on when I check the room at night. It won't be over the tank and only on when I need to see. I'm a little sick of trying to use my phone as a LED red light to check my tarantulas lol. So indeed the first picture does indicate she?

I wasn't exactly sure but sadly I think you're correct, she probably will lose that bit of toe. Grrr. I'll try another soak and to get a bit more off tonight. It seems more black-ish after the soak (compared to after it dried) so I do imagine the circulation has been lost and there's dead tissue. I personally don't think either one has a foot that is 100% sadly. Poor little fellows. I'll keep an eye on the one in question and if need be I'll dip into my video card fund for a vet trip.

I would of never guessed that the tail had dropped previously. That's pretty amazing. I don't think there is anything actually wrong with it, just wanted to be certain and this is the place to ask! :)

Thank you again.

I can't tell the sex of either geckos from your photos. A closer shot of their vent area would help. I agree with Indyana that she will more than likely lose the toe but it shouldn't be a big deal in the long run. I don't like the amount of swelling that's going on and it may indicate an infection but if it's isolated and doesn't spread it may not need vet care. If any more of her foot starts to swell or look red I'd get jer into a vet asap. Good luck! Glad they have a better home now!!

Have to agree with Indy, though if you're going to look for a pair of UTH you might want to consider a multiplug thermostat in the future. Will help regulate the heat a bit better, and auto shut off is a nice feature to have :)

Sunrise will likely have the part of the toe fall off, one of my girls had the same issue on two of her toes (her front feet are almost all stubby) when I got her. Had hoped to save them since they didn't look too bad, but sadly it was not meant to be. Thankfully it was kind of a clean heal from the rest of the toe and there was no issue with infection. When she was pulling off her shed the toe tip just peeled away with it, no blood or open wound to be seen.

Agreed on the dropped tail for Sunset, looks to have that super smooth characteristic of a regrowth... and its a chubby little raindrop.

Sadly the originals were huge so I had to shrink 'em down. Basically both lizards have different looking vents and judging on pic comparisons online between male and female I'm fairly certain of the sex. To be honest I don't really care too much as they shall remain in separate enclosures anyhow. I'll get another photo but my priority for now is on the toe so I'll do my best to get another good photo after a soak this evening.

I think if I keep taking daily pictures it should allow me to monitor any swelling so I'll probably go that route and take it to a vet if that is indeed the case. Thank you =).

I'll look up the multiplug therm online. Honestly first time I've heard of it ^^. I'll see if I can find one on ebay or something. They are on opposite sides of the room right now (and it's a fairly big room) so I'll rearrange when I find a good one and it comes in. For now I'll just grab the heat pads as I figure that is better than those horrid lights they have at the moment.

Thank you for the info about your geckos toes. That makes me feel a little better. By the way chubby little rain drop is the perfect way to sum up the tail of Sunset lol!

If your original pictures are huge then just crop them around the vent area and repost that. I tried to download them and zoom in but the quality isn't good enough for the vent to be clear once it's big enough to tell. :)

Hey guys :)

I just wanted to say thank you all for the advice back here. I also wanted to update. Her toe part fell off about 2 weeks ago. There was a touch of discoloration at the end after it fell off but didn't spread. She shed yesterday and now it looks normal (well as normal as can be expected anyhow). Had to help her get some stuck shed off again but it's all gone so no biggie.

Both are little pigs. Wonderful lizards. One day I'd love to raise one from a baby but have my hands full with my baby beardie (actually he's JUST 3 months so juvenile now, so sad!).

Anyway thanks again :).
