This is my first time posting here but I had to share something really weird that i saw yesterday! So I decided to visit my local pet store called Parrots Of The World and they have all different kinds of birds, reptiles, amphibians etc. But i was surprised to see a leopard gecko there that was $99 but didn't look worth the price. I have to say the owner may seem like he knows a lot about animals but he doesn't. A Lot of the animals are cramped up in cages. There will be like 10 baby bearded dragons in a five gallon tank with a regular bulb. But anyways the leopard gecko looked sick and even if it was healthy I wouldn't price it for $99. Any opinions?

I would advise you not to buy from petstores. I know it sounds cruel, but if that gecko gets into a bad condition and they realize their husbandry wasn't good, they won't restock.

They did that for a petstore I got my firebelly from. He was in awful shape when I got him and his mates were all frying out in the lamp they had on, they didnt even have proper filtration. I haven't seen them restock their firebellies since.

Or, if you're one for confrontation, you can tell them they aren't housing it right and that you'll take him but if you see them mistreating an animal again, you can threaten to report the manager and they'll get sued.

I doubt the shop would get sued. Pet shops keep reptiles in much, much worse conditions than this (he looks cold, but not that bad) with no consequences.

And to answer the original question, I think this leopard gecko would be worth about $30.

I know a lot of pet stores here get sued with reptile care, a few shops actually converted to paper towel for their leopard geckos, instead of getting shit for keeping them on sand.

I'm saying it's worth a shot, and he isn't worth as much as theyre pricing him, but if the OP is really determined, he could buy it and give him a proper home. But they'll just restock and go on to sell another badly housed gecko, if they keep dying, they'll restock less and less.

Remember, when people "rescue" reptiles from a pet store, they are just creating revenue for that store and making an opening for a new animal to be placed in the same conditions.

Eh, I'm not really arguing for or against the OP buying this gecko. What Russell said it true, but also not. It does give the store revenue and does open up new spots, but at the same time I don't think the people who rescue an occasional gecko are the main source of revenue when it comes to these unfortunate reptiles. The educated people may not buy the geckos (aside from the occasional rescue), but the geckos will still be bought, usually by impulse buyers and people who don't know what they're getting themselves into. To stop reptiles being treated this way, everyone would have to stop buying them, which is not going to happen because there will always be people uneducated about reptiles that will come in one day and say "that looks cool, I'll buy it" and ask the ignorant pet shop how to take care of it and end up killing it because they were misinformed.

Personally, I would not buy he gecko. It doesn't look that bad off to me and I certainly wouldn't pay $100 for it. If you want to rescue a gecko, check craigslist. There are many sad stories there and then you wouldn't be supporting this pet store. Or buy this gecko, it won't really make a dent in the problem either way.
