New hide for gecko HELP!

Hey. I saw this hamster hide and loved it, I'm always trying to add height to the viv so that they can climb and are not just restricted to the floor space.

Anyway I know gecko's skin can be quite fragile and I wouldn't want to put anything in their viv that could harm them at all. I saw this:

and loved it, however the 'wood' aspect worries me, especially what looks like wood that could potentially flake off. It was only cheap and if its not right then I WILL NOT put it in my gecko's viv.

How about if it was sanded down and varnished so it was smooth?
Would that be ok?

I just wanted some advice :)

Thats really cool. Id give it a try before sanding it. Maybe just put a coat of varnish over existing finish.

Looks pretty awesome! I wish I could get a couple more hides, but I think my guys have enough as it is for now, lol. Spending a fortune as it is, but that looks like it'd be fun for your little one(s) ^_^

Looks like fun! I also try to add height to my leo's tank. I have fun seeing what i come up with. If you are worried about him now being able to climb u could always glue a cling-able fabric (like linen) to the surface.

try titebond woodglue II - its waterproof, nontoxic, and you can add color to it ( id use watercolor)- as far as climbing- geckos do like to climb, just be sure that its a safe soft landing area and its not to high and there are plenty of hand holds ( not slipery) - also, the use of syrofoam is wonderful- you can form it, texturize it, add color and waterproof it the same, and its light so if it falls ( hopefuly its well secure anyway) it will not hurt the gecko.
here is a pic of one i made ( its more fit for a snake though)
btw, that house is awesome- if your gecko likes it, and it looks safe enough, id try it ;)

You could spray it down with that Krylon waterproofing spray after giving it a light sanding. Let it dry for 36 hours, and any remaining fumes will go away.

Could you give me the name of that hide? I'm trying to find it on Amazon, as I think my geckos would love one too.

just be cautious of the type of wood that is used. CEDAR is a HUGE no go, the oils in it are TOXIC to reptiles. that is probably pine, from the looks of it...but i dont know how the leopards would do with any contact with pine sap. i do NOT know if it would be an issue, just a word of caution, something you should research.
