new housing for leos

I am planning on designing a new terrarium layout for my leo (and eventually another leo which needs to grow a little before I reintroduced her to her roommate). I was hoping to get some tips of cheap materials that I could use. I have a good amount of slate and some other larger rocks. but what can I use as a substrate in order to keep crickets from hiding in the cracks of the rocks. I was thinking about coconut shreds with some sand underneath for a sort of mortar in order to give a height to it. Also I was thinking about building some sort of level system where there will be a hide, an open space with a plan and then a ramp or steps to a higher level of slate for basking. Any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt

about the substrate i think aspen would work mabye i dont use crickets tho but all my feeders always find a way to hid under substrates lol yesterday when i was cleaning the tank and i took out the repticarpet there were like 3 live mealworms under there so my leo got a un expected snack :p but idk cus i know crickets dig in the sand and hide so i guess aspen would stop them from actually going under the substrate lol
