"feed him mealworms daily"

How old is he? Unless he's very young, you do not need to feed him daily. Adult leos can be fed two-three times a week & be perfectly healthy. As for the vitamins, I don't dust EVERY feeding. It also helps to leave a small dish with some calcium powder in the tank at all times. Your leo will lick some at his own pace.

Also, since this IS a new environment, I would recommend not handling him at all for a while. Let him get adjusted to his new home by giving him as much privacy as possible. My leo was given to me by a previous owner and exhibited the same behavior. After a few weeks, she was totally comfortable & allowed me to stroke her gently without biting.

As far as the sand debate goes, it is OKAY to use sand as substrate, provided it is not Calci-Sand, Vita-Sand, or any other sands with additives. Using natural, not dyed, pure quartz sand is fine. This will not impact your leo. However, using the reptile carpet is also just fine. Just be sure it is secured nicely to the floor of the tank - sometimes sneaky crickets or mealworms get underneath it where your leo won't be able to get to them.

Hope this helped! You're doing the right thing by researching & asking questions...I am sure your new leo will be very happy & healthy. Good luck! :p

How old is your leo? The redlight is unnecessary but not harmful. I think you're doing just fine. New owners tend to overdo but that's just normal. Just ask first before implementing something :)
