New leo thoughts

I hate the stress of those first few days/weeks of letting them relax. Watching for them to eat. Gabe's leo from Reptile Addicts has not eaten yet. We brought her home Saturday. She's cute as hell I tell ya. Big FAT tail.

She's already pooped, but none on Sunday. There was a very small poop (talking about 1/8") with a whole lot of urine in the tank last night. A reverse of what I'm used to finding. Part of the urine which is usually chalky looking was more like mucus. (Sorry for the lovely descriptions) I was going take that last sample in for a check but there isn't much left to it after it sat overnight in a container. I have seen her drink water a couple of times. When she walks she seems to hold her tail kind of high. Any thoughts?

Yes, as soon as I get the next one I do plan to have a fecal done. As always, thanks. We really appreciate you taking the time to give your opinions & reassurance as we wait out GP's adjustment period.

mucousy feces can be a sign of parasites, but at the same time she is most likely stressed. Give her at least a week to two weeks before worrying to much. It is stressful on you though and I feel your pain because I get worried at the drop of a hat. A fecal exam will put you at ease. Most likely your doctor will prescribe some panacur and flagyl ( flagyl has shown to cause appetite raises) although not chemically proven. A lot of people do whats called, "shot gunning" with meds to clean out anything that may be wrong. Get a fecal done as soon as you can and you'll feel better. Some Leo's can go for up two- tree weeks without eating. Especially when gravid or smelling phermones from males during season. If she has a large tail you have little to worry about because her body stores will allow her to be fine for a while without eating.

A good book to read is, "understanding reptile parasites", it will give you a lot of information and help you understand and look for signs to really worry about.

Just make sure you keep her in quarentine her for at least 90 days and get any medical issues resolved in that time prior to introducing her to any others.

good luck and rest easy.

I saw that book at the show & forgot to swing back & pick it up. She will forever be housed by herself since Hidey is now a male. No babies here.

One week down & GP still has not eaten. Tonight there was genuine interest/curiousity in the cricket. She even followed it around to the back of the cage. Then chose not to eat it.

All of her other actions appear to be good so far. She's curious. Still explores when she thinks I'm not looking.

I'm still hoping for that sample for the vet. I know he's in town on Tues. C'mon GP...give me something for the vet!!!

Hidey on the other hand is one happy gecko in his cage. And a pig!

Marcia suggested to me when I had (still have) the same problem, that I purchase some repti-aide (got mine at petco) or mix up her slurry. It won't make them gain weight, but it will get something in their system to poop and have a fecal done. They are supposed to activate the appetite as well. For me it just produced a fecal sample to test...grin.

Just a thought...

Are you removing the crix? 90% of my leos will not eat in front of me. I leave 2-3 in over night and check to see if they are gone the next day. They usually are. Leos like to hunt there prey, while you are not watching lol. Good luck. Also mabey try meallies in 24/7 if you are not already.

Thanks for the thougths. I have tried leaving the crickets in overnight twice. They were still there in the a.m. The mealies are in a dish all the time. She is active. I'm pretty convinced that she's OK, but I'll look into the reptiaid stuff.

Last night she shed, but didn't eat most of it? There were lots of pieces of it in her hide. I was under the impression that they eat their shed? Any thoughts on this?

I think you need to do whatever you can to get a fecal in. I would try the slurry or repti-aide. They usually do eat their shed... As long as your temps are good, hides are sufficient, and all other husbandry is good, I think a fecal is definately your next step.

GP's shed went fine. What she didn't eat, we threw in a bag to bring with us to the vet. Who knows (certainly not us), but maybe it'll tell him something. I did get the Repta-aid & gave her a dose of it earlier today. Cross your fingers for us that this helps her into a normal routine.

Hidey noticed GP for the 1st time this weekend which was rather amusing. Too bad big guy, she's not for you! He also shedded this weekend & now looks huge.

So Hidey (male) is in the same room as GP (female)? I believe Marcia mentioned in another thread that males and females give off phermones and these phermones can trigger mating behavior. In GP's case it could trigger her into starting to ovulate which could explain the lack of appetite...how old is GP?

Just another possible idea...VBG

I may not know much - especially about mucus in the feces, but otherwise (to me) it sounds as though she is just nervous and will calm down as she gets more comfortable. By the way, the gecko in your avatar pic looks exactly like my Sela! LOL... long lost twin?? heheheh
