New Reptile Lover!

Hey there!

My name is Shelby and I'm writing you from Minnesota. :) Previously, I've never had much exposure to reptiles and if you had told me that I was going to turn into a lizard lover, I would have told you that you're crazy! However, last year my family and I stayed a month on an island in the Mexican Caribbean and fell in love with the geckos and Iguanas that are everywhere there.

So, two weeks ago, for one of my daughter's birthday, I got her an albino leopard gecko and also got one for myself. Mine is not an albino, I don't know enough about the different morphs to tell you what mine is yet. They are still testing out names. We bounce between Pinky and Brain and Sweety and Pretty. ;)

Then yesterday, we bought two bearded Dragons. I'm so excited to have them. We are voraciously reading material on both Geckos and beardies so that we can provide the best care for them. They both have adequate terrariums currently, although we will for sure need to separate the beardies before they get much older and I'm still reading up on whether cohabitation is suggested or not among geckos. (Assuming they are not boy/girl or boy/boy).

I'm sure I'll be on here a lot seeking your guidance, but I'm doing my best to first research so you're not stuck answering questions that have been answered a hundred times. :) My family is super sweet. We have 5 kids ages 8-16 and they are all very good with animals. We never have to worry about them. :)

Anyway, I just thought it would be a good idea to introduce myself since I'll likely be a frequent visitor. :)

Welcome! Female leopard geckos can usually be kept together, though some females can be aggressive no matter who they're with.

I think originally I was trying to get females hoping we could keep them together. However, now after researching it more, I'm not sure if that is a good idea. I'm having concerns about dominance issues between them and am afraid that one is maybe not thriving as well as the other.

I could just be being paranoid because one is smaller than the other and her tail isn't really fat at all, but I figure while they are new I should error on the side of caution. I, like many people new to reptiles, thought that if one was sleeping on the other, this is probably them cuddling or just how they sleep. But now I'm understanding that it is likely a dominance thing.

However, it makes less sense with Geckos. I mean with Beardies, I get laying on top of one gives the top one the better light and heat, but with geckos, the one on the bottom gets the best warmth from the under the tank heater, etc. But I know it's about more than that.

At the pet shops you'll see all the little geckos piled on top of each other in their hides, etc, so I wasn't sure what to think about it at first. But now I'm feeling like until I have more experience with geckos that I should separate them to make sure they are happy and healthy. :)

I haven't gone to Beards yet, but I am new to Geckos. I wouldn't have thought I would have ever had a lizard ! I read up on them for a while and bought one. A couple weeks later I just got another. I am enjoying them.
