I'm a long time fish keeper, I have killifish, goldfish and catfish.
I consider myself a newbie to reptiles though I did keep anoles as a child.
My experience with anoles turned me off reptiles. I got one, the anole died and then I replaced the anole and the second anole died just as quickly. What I thought I had learned was that reptiles are very difficult to keep alive. And if the anoles are the easiest and cheapest kind, the others must be even more difficult to keep.
Thinking back, I realized my attitude towards keeping reptiles was exactly how some people start and quit fish keeping after keeping fish improperly.
My interest in reptiles came back when I happened to be at ( local chain store) checking for fish gear, when they were having their so called reptile rally. I held an adult bearded dragon and I was enchanted by this creature.
Their event accomplished exactly what they wanted, I now wanted a lizard.
I didn't have the funds nor knowledge to walk out of the store with a new lizard and all the supplies they need, so I put them on my mental wishlist for later.
While I was studying their care, I decided that a crested gecko would be a better choice for me.
The thirty gal. tank setup I had available was only large enough to house a smaller bearded dragon, I'd have to buy a lot of reptile gear, regular buying of live insects , I'd need a larger tank when the BD outgrew mine , and maybe most importantly I was worried that my basement is too humid for a desert animal.
The crested geckos could be fed prepared foods, seemed to need less gear such as specialized lighting, could also be handled, were smaller and liked humid conditions. I still was going to need quite a bit of reptile gear to get started with them.
I just attended a reptile show and came back with my first lizards in many years, a pair of little crested geckos. I am quite nervous not to repeat my anole experience. So of course one of them "decided" to freak me out by not moving all day.
Biggest problem I am now having is typical also of fish keeping, conflicting information.
Most importantly, I planned my entire setup around keeping them together and then after I got them, I have people telling me they will fight. So now they are in separate critter keepers while I sort this out.
