I recently got two small crested geckos of unknown sex at a reptile show. I tried to research their needs and read some care sheets. Suffice to say I could use some tips.
I had planned to house them together in 10 gal and then move them into a 30 gal as they got bigger as I was told they prefer to be started out in smaller spaces.
On getting conflicted information:
-I buy some Repashy food for them. Then someone else at the show says, that's not nutritionally complete. Basically they told me I should feed the Repashy food to my crickets. So I buy the other brand of food called Pangea?. So now I'm going to have to put their food in the fridge because I have a good supply for two little geckos.
-I was told they do better with a heat source. So once again to "cover my bases" I bought them a heater. I was also thinking, I have had my heat go off in the winter before and my house does seem at the lower range of what they like.
- I bought some coconut fiber as that's what a care sheet recommended. Then someone says use paper towels instead.
- I bought some artificial plants, then someone says use egg crates.
- I'm trying to raise crickets to feed them and some other critters here, but then someone says crickets are no good get dubia roaches instead. I missed the only dubia roaches for sale at the reptile show so that settled that.
- Some people say breeding insects yourself saves money, others say it's a waste of time and or not economical.
-I thought they could live together and now I get told they will fight. Best to house them in individual critter keepers.
Once I was going to separate them in small critter keepers, it messed up my planning for their tank setup. The heater I bought was going to be too much, most of the hidey places were too large, water/food dishies were going to be too large and bought single set of thermometor and humidy gage for them.
So both are now in individual critter keepers with paper towels, a small flower pot, a plastic cave, furniture coasters( make shift water dish for tiny tank since what I had planned was too big), and some silk plants.
Based on what I read, I am going to avoid handling them for two weeks, have covered up one side of the critter keeper with cardboard and I haven't fed them at all yet.
