Newbie question about grout

OK, finally got around to starting a fake rock project. But my dilemma is, what's a good grout mix:water ratio? I'm using sanded grout as I've read that's what you use, and the first time I made a small batch to test I just sort of eyeballed the mix and ended up with a muddy mix on the bottom of the bowl and some brownish water floating above it, and when I tried to apply it to the foam it didn't work very well. A little confused, anybody know how I should go about doing this? This is my first time making fake rock lol :p Thanks!

Not sure I did it right but I mixed it to the consistance of pudding and applyed it with a paint brush. I just did the first layer today so we will c how it looks after the 2nd coat. Kinda sounds like you either didnt mix it enough or put to much water in, just add a little water at a time. You can always add more if you want, hopes this helps.

First layer i did i made it runny so it got into all the gaps, then after that i made the other mixes a little thicker untill it made a nice solid cover.

I make custom tanks a lot, and I found that i used 1 pound of grout to 3/4 cup water. These dont have to be that specific. Now that i know what the amounts look like I just guess. I also use unsanded grout to fill in the small spaces, and add sand to make another layer. But i have used sanded grout and it worked just fine. It is very easy to add too much water if your not careful. I did it today actually, i wasnt taking my time mixing and miscalculated.

If you buy grout that is already liquid and in a tub, do you just slap a few coats on and call it a day?

you just need to mix it well and let it sit for about 5 mins. The consistency will change. (it thickens). Mix again and apply. You'll figure it out as you go. Just make small batches at a time.
