Newly decorated

Here's Flint's newly decorated home, if anyone wants to have a nosey at it. I appreciate I'll being buried under a barrage of anti-sand campaigners, but aside from the substrate, any comments? The warm end is the end with the reptile den and the coconut etc, but as the tank is big and the house is freezing the lamp keeps the middle warm and the other end cool without being freezing.

Is the lamp actually inside the tank? That could be dangerous. I second the no sand, Leopard Gecko's do not live on sand in their natural habitat, so why put them on it in captivity when it is dangerous?

But the set up looks really nice, I really want a bigger tank to play around with...

Please tell me, where did you get that terrarium?

Oh yeah, and you need to loose that sand! :main_thumbsup:

Yes, the lamp is inside, I had it on top but not enough heat was getting through to the floor. There's currently no way she can get to it though, I realise it's not ideal and ultimately I probably need a more powerful lamp, and I would one day like to add a second level in there, which would probably mean moving the lamp, but for now I'm confident the only creatures at risk of burning themselves are maybe the odd overly adventurous cricket.

nats, the viv came from here http://www.paraquatics.co.uk/ but obviously it's UK based.

I really like the setup! It really looks great! :)

The only thing I would change about it is the lamp. Instead, I would go with an UTH to provide proper belly heat.

I have a terrible story involving a lamp inside the tank, like yours. Needless to say, something happened that he thought was impossible, and it devastated the guy. I would hate to see that :(

Nice even though I'm not a sand fan but to each his own :)

I agree with Heather Under Tank Heaters are the way to go and cheaper then buying a light eachtime that one goes out plus it provides the proper belly heat. It's also easier to regulate. I wouldn't be worrying about your leo getting to the light but the bulb exploding or something. It might be rare but I've had it happen before and it's NOT fun.

I do actually have a UTH too but got the lamp because the cool end was just getting so cold. I know she can stay up one end but felt it would be better. Once summer comes (and once I move out of this house!) I may well not need it. But the right hand side as you look at the tank has a UTH on a thermostat.

I'm sorry Heather to here about your friend's mishap with the lamp though. As I say, ideally I'd get the lamp out of there too but student heating budgets and drafty houses don't make for toasty leos.

I might just recommend reptile carpet for your substrate. It still looks nice and is safe for your leo. Also, with an UTH you should be able to regulate the temperature in the cage just fine with the proper thermostat.

Sorry for making this thread sound like a broken record.

Nice tank by the way!
