Night lights...

Another newbie question from FL. I was wondering how ya'll light up the cages at night. I like to observe Lizzy, especially when she's hunting crickets, but she's most active at night. I don't want to fire up the big lights and mess up her schedule, but my wife is tired of me sitting in the dark staring at the cage :D Do the red bulbs work, without messing up her day/night cycle. Do they throw off enough heat that I need to worry about overheating her? For now I use a basking light in the daytime to keep her above 80. I have a UTH and rheostat, but I'm waiting to get my tempgun before I turn that on.

I would go with the UTH and ditch the basking lights. Leos are nocturnal (which you know since you are doing the nighttime peeping Tom routine :p). The UTH will provide the belly heat they need to help with digestion. You shouldn't need an additional heat source unless your house is extremely cool.

As far as night viewing - red lights will do the trick. You don't need to spend any extra money for a reptile-type bulb, a simple red party bulb will do the same thing for a fraction of the cost.

Good luck and welcome to geckoforums :D

Jacksonville.

I was so bummed about not making it to Daytona, but we had just returned from camping in TN and the family wasn't up for a road trip...
