I have a question regarding red bulbs. Do guys know if there is any difference between the red night bulbs you buy at pet stores and red incandescent bulbs at the the hardware store? (which are less than half the price of the pet store bulbs) This is also info for my other reptiles mainly although i plan to put a low wattage bulb in my leo tank for nighttime

I believe the ones you get at pet stores put off more heat than the ones you can buy at the hardware store, though I can't say for sure. But leos actually can see red light, so I would suggest a ceramic heat emitter instead.

There is no difference between the red bulbs at the pet store versus those at other stores. However, like the poster above said I would not suggest using the red bulbs. CHE's are better, or the black night glo bulbs are fine as well.

Don't the latter give off a purple light?

It gives off a tiny bit of purplish glow at the base of the bulb. I use them and when it is pitch black at night, it doesn't even give off enough light for me to see the tank.
Well, in all fairness, they have night vision exponentially better than ours, so that would still do pretty much the same thing as the red bulbs.

In many years of reptilekeeping (including geckos) none of my herps have ever had a problem with the black night glo bulbs. When I tried using the red, I did notice a difference in behavior. Never with the black night glo bulbs though. They are perfectly fine to use.

I'm not saying it'd cause problems. But it's been shown that their nighttime color vision is exponentially greater than ours, so surely they see it much better than we do - but it still wouldn't be as bright to them as the red bulbs.
