The best way to learn is to just use it. Trial and error worked best for me. I would also say try to use the camera in as many light settings as you can. The most trouble I still have is taking pictures with an immense amount of light. It always looked washed out.
The more you use it the more things will come to you. Also if you know someone who is good with a DSLR they can always teach you some things.
Thanks for the replies. After 2 days i can take decent pictures using the manual controls and using the macro function on the camera. I have been working on getting eye shots and taking pics of my tomato plant to help me figure out some of the settings.
When i first got the camera i was more then overwhelmed with all the things that it can do. After a good hour or better reading through the manual and practicing taking pics i have found that it no longer intimidates me. LOL
Check it out! The man actually read the instructions! I haven't had a chance to do that yet. Once I do I plan on using the video function on it. Hopefully in the next day or two we will be able to post some new hatchling pics. They should be better than the ones I took of the first batch with my cell.
I've heard a lot of great things about the D5000, I sure you are going to make a lot of great photos with it. After reading the user's manual the best resource I can recommend is this book:
If you like it there is a second volume available and a 3rd coming in August. Even 2 years after getting my D40 I still reference those books, they are great.
