well i like it but you'll notice theres not a single reptile in either video. they arent concerned so much with the reptiles care but mainly the "cute furry ones". i do think this will affect the reptiles too and would not mind live pet sales being banned from big box stores or at least some kind of regulation of which stores get to sell live animals.

I think that they need to come up with some sort of certification for these people that are supposed to be "experts" in the departments. We go to a couple of the big stores to pick up dog and cat treats and reptile items that I cannot get at out small local shop and I have complained numberous times about the conditions that their reptiles are in. There used to be a girl at the big store near us that knew alot about the reptiles but she was fired. One of the clerks said that she was let go because she violated store policy and used items that were not approved by management. She opened up and used UTH. Boy talk about a horrible violation!!!!!!! That really set the company back huge chunks of money.

All this reminds me of the lead in toys thing. The almighty dollar has far overtaken people and animal safety. The breeders here on Gecko forums i feel do a very good job taking care of and raising Leos and other types of reptiles.

They sell them very healthy and have a good start in life. If people on gecko forums can do it, then big time breeders and animal suppliers can do it also.

I cant figure if its a money thing or a lazy thing. I even take care of stray cats in my neighborhood by giving them flea treatments and de-worm treatments. Im trying to convince my local animal control people not to euthanize the cats , but simply to spay/neuter and release them, i think thats a whole lot better then killing them! Treat and release is my moto now!

Maybe that could work or atleast be a partial solution.

Killing them is not controlling the stray population, its obvious.

I'll support PETA and HSUS as soon as they stop telling me what to eat or keep a dog or cat over other animals.

Actually I'll support them when Pam Anderson or Alicia silverstone eats raw meat.

I have heterodon dentition (variable teeth) designs for a myraid of foods.

Are you ******* kidding me?! Outdoor cats and feral cats DESTROY elements to eco-systems. They kill for pleasure! They eradicate native herpetofauna, as well as birds. Don't get me wrong, I love cats (hate dogs) and we always had one growing up. But if there were any worse of an introduced species into an eco-system it'd be a cat. It pains me to see and read the numbers of cats euthanized, but it PALES in comparison to the native wildlife they kill.

I have native lizards on my side yard of my apartment. I've had them left dead on my front porch by cats. I find a cat doing that and can capture it I guarantee you, as a city employee and a public citizen, I'll call animal control. If the cat has tags, I'll also call the owner to tell them where their cat is at and them also read to them our City Ordinance prohibiting cats being off leash!

yes releasing animals..cats and dogs as well as reptiles is indeed a bad idea. The stray population is so big b/c some people are irresponsible with their animals, do not get them fixed and let them go wild with each other and then when they have xx number of puppies/kittens they either let them go or push them off on a shelter.

The problem is MANY people have outside cats. It's not just the strays. I never thought about it until this thread but cats do kill a lot of animals for the sport of it. It makes you think.

WELL, I have a ton to say about this issues..as I work for the company that PETA wants to boycott.

First - I don't agree with buying from large vendors

That being said..

The company that I work for states that money should NEVER be an issue when decided to take ANY animal to the vet. Reptile included. If an animal does not receive proper care..it is because of employee failure, not company policy.

It is policy to provide good care for all of our pets. And, personally, I strive to make this happen. Money is not a factor as far as I (or anyone at the store I am located in) am concerned. I just had an order put in for new UTHs and night bulbs for our reptiles..My manager quickly agreed that this needed to happen and they were ordered the second I pointed it out.

I can't speak personally for all of the stores. The company has strict guidelines for petcare. If you see a store not providing good care for the pets this is an EMPLOYEE failure and I suggest you complain immediately. All pets need to have clean bedding. Feeding based on vet approved diets. CARPET FOR ALL LIZARDS UNDER SIX INCHES. Also, I am allowed to put all of our adults (leopards) on carpet...which I do.

I can refuse sale of any animal to a person I do not feel will properly take care of it. This is also policy.

We give millions every year to local rescues and host local rescues in our store 24/7.

Every pet store has it's issues...Personally I feel ours is a vendor issue.

I did see the whole Peta thing and something is wrong over there to. I never knew that they had those views, my fault for lack of looking into them.

I belive in proper treatment of all animals even if they are for consumption. The whole idea for proper treatment of pets, livestock, etc etc is an excellent idea but, they have gone off on some strange tangent and mutated into something else.

I guess i jumped the gun on the whole Peta thing and im sorry.

Disregard the whole Peta thing and be good to your Leos!

Sometimes even good intentions (PETA) can backfire or turn into something it was not originally viewed to be or become.

NM Dept of Game & Fish is a prime example with bullfrogs and oryx. They released bullfrogs here to provide as a game species and have now spread, eating native wildlife and filling niches of our local reptiles and amphibians. The oryx is a large antelope from Africa released here to, again, be used as a game species within the state. The sad part is NMDGF has expressed desire to eradicate it from the state, BUT is hesitant in doing so because of the revenue they generate. The hunt tag is a lifetime draw, 1 time good deal, and for out-of-state people runs, last I checked, $1600. Of course that is a drop in the bucket when you consider a guy paid $90,000, yes 5 zeros, to be the first person for an elk tag last season.
