not being able to see dusted insects?

my new gecko (first ever :main_yes: ) doesn't seem to be able to see dusted crickets and mealies (white against white paper towel substrate), and usually won't go for them until they've crawled behind a hide or something. Also by the time he does catches it, most of the dusting has fallen off the cricket. I keep mealies in a dish with calcium in his enclosure at all times, but he doesn't seem to eat them either (he only eats mealies when I drop them in front of his face). He's got a great appetite, but I'm worried that he isn't getting enough calcium. I'm not sure if he's actually licking the calcium from his calcium dish either. Also, I know I'm supposed to give vitamin powder few times a week, but how? Do I put in a 'vitamin dish'?

What are some different ways of making sure he's getting enough calcium besides dusting the crickets etc? Would adding calcium to the gut load work?

Thanks in advance

I have the same thing going on with mine, he wont eat the Mealworms from a dish, i have to give them to him one at a time.
A guy told me to get some calcium drops and put it in his water i personaly haven't got any of that yet though.

Put the insects you want to feed him into a bag, or cup, or something else that has the dust you want to give your leo. Then shake them around a bit until the dust is all over the insects, and drop the insects in front of your leo, or put them into a dish.

My leos both prefer insects that are more wiggly than meal worms. One eats crickets, and the other eats supers.

Here's an update..
I've pretty much worked it out :)
I only dust half the cricket, so the other half is dark against the paper towl and still visable, he seems to be having an easier time catching them. I really hate feeding crickets though lol, I have to wait for him to catch it, and watch it like a hawk so I can keep moving it back in front of him until I see him eat it (unless he absolutely refuses to eat, then I take it back), I just can't stand the idea of a cricket loose inside the enclosure, then finding it dead when cleaning it the next week...ugh.
He has a better time catching mealworms because they don't run away before he's had a chance to react.

It seeems like he hates eating/drinking out of his dishes though, I only see him licking water from his humid hide, never from the water dish, and he never eats the mealworms in the dish.

ha ha

I have one that likes to drink from her humid hide too; and another one that I regularly catch drinking from his dish. They are so cute and funny sometimes!

It's actually a good thing that you take out uneaten crickets and don't let them run loose in the tank all night. Loose crickets can stress out your leo, and sometimes even nibble on them.
