Anyone else sick of clicking on an ad on this forum, especially the large one to the right and when you go to "available" theres NOTHING to buy? No geckos, no pictures, nothing! At least put a note that says that you are currently out but are working on adding some new geckos?? In fact, they haven't updated their website in a year or longer. I actually found a gecko site that hasn't been updated for 3 years, yet they are still in business! :main_huh: Why advertise if you have NOTHING to sell? I understand you may be out of geckos at the moment, but theres plenty of other breeders with tons of geckos all year. Sorry, it's annoying to me, but this is where to get it off my chest I guess. Let the hate mail begin.

while the site may be contractually obligated to run the ads for a specified period, the breeders aren't obligated to stay in business for the same period.

I get it. It just bugs me. If you go out of business, then common courtesy would be to notify the site so they can remove your ad and they can free it up for another business.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I know the owner, of one of the companies you are probably complaining about. I have spoke with him about this before. He is not out of business and has gecko’s year around but his site hasn’t worked in like forever. He has no idea about computers, so he paid someone to build and maintain his site. That person left him high and dry. It was like 3-4 months later before he even knew the guy wasn’t running it. He then paid someone else to start maintaining the site. The problem was he didn’t know any of the passwords so they decided to rebuild the site. I know, the new web designer is trying to make it so my buddy can update it himself. With him not knowing computers, I think the designer might of bit off more then he can chew. I know his site has been down for over a year now but hopefully it will be up soon.

Anyways, I know how you feel but sometime things happen that can’t be controlled. With no passwords he isn’t able to change anything on his site but doesn’t get rid of it because people still call him after seeing the site.

I am guilty of not updating my website often. I place ads here and on fauna. I mostly keep my website for my terms of sale and breeders pictures. Anyone can e-mail me to find out what I have any time of the year. I usually don't have many available in the winter. My big selling time is June-October.

Speaking as a breeder, I usually sell-out by winter and don't have anything else available until summer and fall... especially like this year since my season got started so late. I suppose I could take all the photos down from my website, but I want people to be able to see what morphs I work with, what they look like, and what to expect with my pricing. When I do have geckos available for sale, I am pretty good about updating my site monthly with new geckos and new photos of geckos that have not sold since the last update.

In many cases, if you don't see what you are looking for on someone's website, all it takes is an email inquiry to find out if they DO have anything that isn't on the site, or at least find out when they will have them available. When I have a website update, I post an announcement on all the forums and my Facebook page, and I do see lots of other breeders doing that as well.

Thanks for the replys Kristi and Marcia. For the record, your sites aren't the ones I'm talking about. The sites I'm frustrated with are the one's who are advertising in more than one section/site and when you go there, there's not even a picture available of "sold" animals. I mean nothing. Zippo. Available page might as well not even be there. I enjoy both of your sites btw.

Another thing to consider is that most banner advertising is for an entire year, whether or not we have animals available. Just look at it as a way for advertisers to financially support the website their banners are posted on. Without paid advertising, many 'free' websites would not be running at all. ;)

(Thanks for the compliment, Chris!)

I sometimes wonder, in the case of banner ads, if people keep the ad rolling and pointed at an empty website when they have nothing to sell, just to ensure that they don't lose that banner ad spot for next year. Most websites will have a maximum number of banners that they will rotate in a given slot, to ensure ad-time for each of the businesses that is paying them. Many of the more popular websites end up with a waiting list, advertisers with money in hand that are turned away because there aren't enough ad slots. If I were running a business and got a spot on a site that was good for redirecting traffic, I surely would not want to let my ad lapse and find out that I'm stuck at the back of the line again.
