Are superworms able to eat a old-fashioned oats substrate? I know it's good for mealworms but I haven't found a direct quote saying it is good for superworms.

I'm asking because I had my 500 superworms in the old-fashioned oats since last thurs and the oat still look relatively uneaten and I'm seeing small signs of cannibalism. Should I switch to instant oatmeal?

the main problem with using oats is separating the worms from the oats. if you grind the oats into a fine powder that will pass through a sifter you'll be able to sift the worms out of the substrate easily. that's why i use wheat bran, it doesn't suck up water as easily as oats and is a finer grind that will pass through the screens, simplifying the separation process.

if they don't have enough moisture available, they will cannabilize the other worms. make sure there's always potato slices or carrots or other moisture-containing food available and that should solve your problem.

good luck!

I realized the problem with using oats after cleaning out the container just now. It was hard getting those worms out. I'm going to use wheat bran next time once the fresh oats needs changing.

As for moisture, I've been trying out new stuff recently. I had giving them sliced baby carrots at first but I realized they died up too fast for my liking. I then started using potato slices but they molded too quickly. The cannibalism happened when I tried those Cricket Quencher gel things from Petsmart. I could tell after two days they were not eating them and the gel was turning the oats into mush so I went back to potatoes for now.

Does it matter whether or not a potato is sliced or not? Can a superworm eat through potato skin?
