The beetle is probably a mealworm that went through metamorphosis and transformed into it. You could keep it in its own container filled with oats, wheat, etc with other beetles and hopefully hatch some mealworms.

Was it a mealworm that turned into a beetle? I've almost had that happen, but it's no big deal as far as I'm concerned, just throw it out.

There are several on here who've had success in having their own mealie colony. You just have to have the right setup for it.

There are many sites (as well as threads here) that go into detail about breeding mealworms. It takes alot of time and patience but it can be done successfully. Search here and on Google for "Breeding Mealworms" and you should find enough info to get you started.

they are very easy to grow yourself.

i bought 3000 in the past 3 weeks, of which 200 have turned into beetles and another 1000 have pupated.

in a few months my colony should be able to sustain itself without renewin the mealies with $$$$$$.

Just some advice-- The cooler you keep them, the longer it'll take for them to breed, pupate, etc. so if you keep them around 75* you should get results faster.
