here is one of my tanks I have beentrying to explain the substrate i use so thought i would show , it a fake turf but has natural fibres, and its kinda soft. there are no loops to get there claws stuck into either. There is about a 2inch space at the front right side that they like to climb , we have also added a med magnetic shelf to the back wall it kinda hides behind the plant , and we recently added a lay box under the hide that is under the ramp and removed the smaller moist hide. they still have the larger moist hide.
