One or two?

I am getting my gecko next week ... I have a 10 gallon waiting at the moment but as soon as we move ( which wont be long) they will get the 20 long I have, if moving is delayed I will buy a bin with a big enough floor space.

I am just not sure whether to get 1 or 2. I know they can be aggressive and I will have the 10 gallon on standby. but I figured if I was going to adopt two then getting them together would be the way to go. so they are the same size, familiar with each other and there is no quarantine.

I know more hides will be needed and I will probably need a tank bigger than a 20 long, I want to save for a nice exo terra terrarium.

what are your thoughts on getting two?

Personally I never keep my geckos together unless for breeding reasons. The risk is high with them not getting along, not eating correctly, etc. I would just rather get another set up and keep them seperate.

I would definately just start with one gecko, especially if this is your first one. Geckos can become territorial and have food dominence issues. Also, they seem to just get along better (in my own, and many other's experience) without cagemates getting in the way of their favorite hiding spots and such. Keeping them seperate also lets you moniter who is eating what, and how much, if are they pooping normally, and it just makes it easier to keep an eye on their health. Not to mention that if they are juvenile when you get them, they may turn out to be male and male (which you would probably discover after they attack eachother) or that they are male and female (which can leed to underage/weight breeding that can cause egg binding and/or prolapse).

I'd just err on the cautious side, and get just one so that you can get your feet wet in the gecko world before you jump in :)

I have been leaning towards one but there were a few advantages of starting with two rather than adding one later so I felt it was best to go ahead and asked.

Well I'm glad that you asked and have done your research before going ahead and getting your gecko :D However many geckos you have will be in good hands with you :)

@elli: wow you're getting your hands full lol.. coming from someone like me who keeps a lot of other pets like you, I'm pretty sure you can handle 2 but just don't house them in together yet til you're familiarized with their personalities ad behaviors. I'm pretty sure you already did tons of research so that's about it :p
