thought I'd show pics of our boys :) we have no clue if Bahamut is a special morph or not, we just bought him from PetCo. He has never grown to full adult size for some reason (not that I need to point any fingers)..Icarus is Leucistic/Hypo

w much did you pay for 1 of your BD's and all the supplies?

The beardie was about $40 (I think), but they could be less. The cage was pretty expensive ($180) as most cages are...but it's also a very HUGE cage (55 gal.) Beardies can be kept in small cages, but they will eventually need the big 55 gal. size because they can get up to 2 feet long. But other than that, they don't cost much. They don't use hides like leopard geckos do, so they just need stuff to climb on.. If you live near the woods (which we don't), you can find your own branches to use and everything. All you have to do is stick them in the oven for a bit to kill off anything that may be on them.

Oh, but beardies require UVB lighting, and that can be a little expensive, but I know of a great website that sells them much cheaper than everyone else..

The lights are $25 and the fixtures are $25. Still seems like a lot of money, but trust me, these lights sell for $35 or more elsewhere, and I'm sure the fixtures aren't as cheap either.

And actually, you may be able to find the fixtures at Home Depot for even cheaper.

I didnt know you had beardies, Jess??!! They look great. I do however want to make some necissary suggestions.

First, the substrate is horrible. like leopard geckos, Beardies will ingest the pellets, possibly causing impaction. Not to mention the harmful paracites and bacteria livin in there. The urine drips down between the pellets and wont be picked up, causing an unsanitary environment.

Next, Beardies really cant be kept in smaller enclosures, even 55 gallons are small for one beardie, let alone to. I keep my one male beardie in a 96 gallon custom tank. He has plenty of room to run and frolick around(lol!!!)
55's dont have the width that beardies need. They are not wide.

I agree. You have beautiful dragons but they are not cheap nor are they easy to keep.:D
One adult dragon should be kept in minimum 75 gallon breeder tank but at least a 4x2x2 is preferred.
They like a leo should be kept on tile, paper towel, newspaper or a substrate like that. You can house adults over a year old on washed play sand if wanted but dragons like to lick and taste everything.
They require expensive UVB that has to be replaced every 6 months and high basking temps. They do like there hides too. Some of mine like to sleep in there hides and some like to sleep on a vertical tile or branch.
Babies should be housed in nothing smaller than a 30 breeder and by the time they are 6 months old need to be moved to a bigger tank or cage.
Just thought I would let you know. A great site for learning about care of beardies is beardeddragon.org.
Its just as informative as this site. The people on there know a lot about dragons. I own close to a dozen and they are pretty expensive hobby.:main_thumbsup:

Thanks! I really did do my research before buying them..

We were told that this substrate was safe for them to eat, even healthy(it's alph-alpha pellets), and it was from a more trusted reptile store, so we didn't really think to ask questions... but if it really is a problem, then I suppose we can pick up some tile for them when we get some for our leos :)

We have two foot long UVB lights in both cages (and yes they were expensive!) and their temps are 100 degrees on the hot side. They both like to sleep on their branches ;)

Our beardies are also housed seperately (they are both males and are drastically different in size), both in 55 gal. cages, which we were also told was big enough for one beardie... But that's okay too, we can get a bigger cage for Icarus and give his 55 gal. to our leos ;)

I think that is a 65 tank? That is a fine size for a small dragon.
I am one of those anal beardie people that is all about perfect husbandry.lol
I am sure I will be a anal leo owner soon too.
I know there are people that raise happy and healthy dragons in a 55 long and they do just fine. I have the philosophy that bigger is always better but they do recommend one adult dragon have a 4x2x2
There are some pretty cheap ways of making them for less then a hundred bucks.
My collection keeps growing so I am going to have to pound out a few myself. I will be keeping one baby from each clutch so I will need more space. :main_yes:
I do love your dragons they are beautiful.
Oh and the alfalfa pellets will not hurt them at all. They can eat them and digest it just fine. It is more of a waste of money to me because you have to change it so often. It will harbor a lot of bacteria and beardies love to lick it.

I wasn't really sure of the tank size, just assumed it was 55.

We definitely want to get tile since it can be cleaned and doesn't need to be replaced all the time... We also have to get a bigger cage for our growing leo collection, so we can just get one for the big beardie and give the leos his current cage.. I think the smaller beardie we have will be just fine in his cage, since he isn't growing any bigger..

Thank you very much, they are very awesome, mellow little guys ;)
