Out of season mating?

Yesterday I brought out a pair of geckos to show to some of our thanksgiving guests, and while they were out running around outside their aquarium, we noticed a little bit of mating ritual (tail rattling) by the male towards the female right out on our coffee table. These two are normally kept separated, the male living alone, and the female with her sisters. I've never had that happen before, at least in fall/winter. We, of course, separated the two right away. It was 16 degrees outside this morning, far outside of the typical breeding season. Is my male a little confused, or is this kind of behavior more common out of season than I thought?

I'm by no means a breeder but males being what they are look for breeding opporunity where they can find it. I heard some one say once that males are always ready regerdless of size, weight, or age. It's the females that play catch up.

They can breed at any time of the year and you can "trick" them into breeding.
