some advice for hermie owners: never, ever pick up a hermit crab while it is trying to sleep or burrow. My hand still smarts, and the incident was hours ago. Especially if the hermit crab has a claw the size of a quarter.

I swear, it felt like it was still pinching me 5 hours later. I still like them, just wear a glove until they get used to regular handling.

They can pinch right through soft flesh. I still have a scar on the palm of my hand from a large one I kept as a kid. As long as you handle them properly, this usually does not happen. If they get spooked, though, especially when encountering an edge or drop-off in your hands while you hold them, then they'll sometimes grip and withdraw into their shells at the same time. That is potentially not fun. I've only ever had that problem once and I have handled a great many species and thousands of individual hermit crabs over the years.

ive seen one large one the size of a skull, at Hoffer's tropic life pets, crack off an employee's finger(probly at the joint). so yeah, something that can open a coconut, dont startle! i used to keep a huge pair, and if you give them a dish of salt water as well ass fresh, theyll breed. its a pain, but a welcome challange to try to raise the babies, if anyones got the idle want to.
