paper towels and sand

okay so I posted pics of my tanks and they had sand in them and people told me I shouldn't, so I somewhat fixed it. Over the sand I have paper towels because I had just put the new sand in and didn't want to get rid of it. My geckos really have no way to get to the sand and there still is some what of a soft feeling under their feet. Do you think that is better, or still get rid of the sand? and do you guys have problems of some crickets getting under the paper towels?

crickets will get under anything. As far as the sand, if I remember you had them on sand for like the whole time you have had them like 1 or 2 years then maybe you are one of the lucky ones. If it is not calci-sand then it should be fine. I do know a reptile breeder that always has his leopard geckos (even hatchlings) on play sand. It works for him. Sand isn't my thing but if it works for you I am not going to give you grief over it.

i use tile instead of paper towels so i wouldn't have to worry about it anyway, but i don't feed crickets either. i would get more frustrated with them squeezing behind hides and such... i found a mealworm beetle, pupae and a mealworm all outside of the dish and hiding under things last night when i moved some stuff around

Why would you not want to throw it out? You arent going to use it again right? Sand is only, what, $5/bag?

It has been proven sand can and does cause Impaction I would get rid of it ASAP. Theres no point in having Paper Towels over Sand because your geckos can still get under the Paper Towels and ingest sand.
