I was browsing the pets section on Craigslist just now and ran across an ad for two adult leos that this person wanted to rehome. They said in the ad that it was a male/female combo that are housed in the same 20 gal tank. They said that they are "proven breeders" because the female has layed eggs many times

Their solution for it? They throw the eggs in the trash as soon as they are layed!!

I sent them a very rude email basically telling them to get their heads outta their butts and separate the male and female if they don't want them breeding

I was going to post the link here so you could see, but they removed it

Killing all those leos because they are too dumb to separate the adults is just sad and unnecessary

Why should they have to incubate the eggs (and then face having to feed and eventually find homes for all of the hatchlings)? It's not like the eggs know what is happening to them.

I wouldn't do it personally...but then again I wouldn't put a male and female together unless I wanted eggs. Is it stupid? Sure. But I also agree that it's far better for that person to toss the eggs then hatch them out and try to find homes for them. If the person doesn't care enough to have seperate homes for the adults, do you really want them raising more geckos in an already over-crowded market?

You wanna hear bad? I just saw one where someone is giving away two leos "both in great health although one is missing a foot". They are in 1 tank with FIVE heat sources....

I guess no one got the point...

The whole point is that they shouldn't have the male and female together if they don't want the eggs at all...

I didn't say anything about them hatching the eggs and raising them

Wow...

You're probably the same type of person who would do that rather than just not house the two together

That's fine, you judge me without knowing anything about me.

Which part exactly is it that you object to? The throwing away of the eggs? Why do you object to this, because it is preventing a potential leopard gecko?? In which case...you should always keep the male in with the female and incubate all eggs, otherwise you are again denying more 'potential' leopard geckos their way into the world.

I don't really understand your argument, if you even have one.

Why do you think separating the two will prevent the female from laying eggs?

Lyndsey, just because someone doesn't agree with you is not justification to pass judgement on them. Granted, they should not have the pair housed together if they don't want them breeding, but I feel that throwing away the eggs is better than having too many geckos to try and feed and find homes for... not to mention not being able to care for them properly. Perhaps this is the reason they are selling them in the first place?

I agree they should not be housed together, the female is prob stressed out from the males attempts at mating. However all that is water under the bridge, and she's going to lay eggs no matter what till she is done ovulating. So throwing out the eggs really isn't an issue, at least he/she's not incubating them and over crowding hatchlings.

The only other objection I really have with this person is saying they are proven breeders just because the female laid eggs. Until a baby hatches from those eggs they are not proven in my book.

I agree that they shouldn't be kept together, because they are going to mate and eggs will come. They apparently can't care for the eggs so they toss them which is better than having 2-20 hatchlings more you can't care for.

I wasn't judging you, that came out wrong

I object to throwing away the eggs because they are too lazy to seperate them.

How is that hard to understand??

So females lay eggs even if they don't mate with a male? Hmm, never knew that lol. I have a female and she has yet to lay eggs

Yes, it is bad that they don't just separate them, but since there is nothing they can do at this point, I don't see anything wrong with throwing them out. It kinda goes back to the horse slaughtering thread on the forum a couple months back. If you look at it ONLY as "throwing away fertile eggs" it sounds bad. However, if you think of how it would be otherwise, it is probably better that way.

About separating them now, she could still be laying eggs for another year, so that isn't a "quick" solution. It isn't that what you said is hard to understand. There is just more to it.

Yes, they can lay eggs without mating. Many times they absorb the follicles before they form an egg, but not always.

Thank you for replying nicely and explaining. I didn't realize she would keep laying eggs. That kind of thing just bothers me since I'm such an animal lover lol

I read throwing eggs in the trash and it just got to me
