Pet Store conversation

I just had to share this with you guys. I was at a popular chain petstore and I asked if I could see the LGs. The young man immediately assumed I knew nothing about geckos and was sort of talking to me in layman's terms so I went along with it asking obvious questions and such. After I saw the LGs he asked me if I wanted to see the Crested Gecko because it felt really cool....we used to keep them so I'm very familiar with how they feel..anyway he pulls it out by the TAIL!! and places in on my arm so I can feel it walk on me...I then ask him if he might jump (I know they jump) and he says "no don't worry I've got him by the tail"..and sure enough he did. I have a feeling that poor Crested will be losing that tail..he was so rough with him!

tut, why do places have reptiles if theyre not gona be trained and learn about them...
The same reason McDonald's isn't hiring chefs... because unskilled teenagers will work for cheap, and who cares if they know what they're doing because they'll turn a buck.

another reason why i won't buy from those stores...if people dont' buy from them, they will stop selling pets they know nothing about. And ultimately saving the little guys from these forms of neglect!

I worked at a pet chain store for a summer. The reptile guy there was the reason I got in to reptiles in the first place. He was caring and knew what each species needed. He'd get angry when store policies got in the way. Like when the freezer broke down and they had to wait on feeder mice for the snakes. He had enough after to long and made the manager drive to get the feeders from a different location more than 30 miles away. Also, he refused to sell critters to people who couldn't handle them. The store got in a pair of Columbian rainbow boas who were picky eaters; he only sold them to experienced people who knew how to feed them right. If I were to ever buy from a pet store again, I would make sure he was the guy running the operation.

that's why i don't like them handling the animals unless i know i'm going to buy it, and if they miss treat it... i'll make sure they know i'm mad...

my main hobby is reef/marine fish and freshwater fish... man... out of the 40 or so stores i go to, only 4 of them know what they are talking about... kind of crazy because these are fish store owners and well... that's their life... imagine big named stores... wow..

it's funny going to reptile shows or reptile shops... because to them keeping a chameleon happy is hard work... LOL... i tell them, "you don't know what hard work is until you get a reef tank..." reef keeping is my passion, and i'm in a couple of local clubs... so the leopard gecko thing is like a side hobby to keep me entertained some more... these guys are neat, and the genetics/possibilities make is worth the work and wait...
