Ok, so how do you get a good picture of a gecko??? I know I need a new camera, I use a Canon Powershot, and it's really not made for this, but what so you all use for lighting? And what about those great poses? Urban Gecko has their lizards in almost the same pose for every shot. How is that done?

Natural sunlight really brings out the color or your geckos, and the urban gecko? i dont know how he does it. all i know is that his pictures are really good. for poses, i just try and make them look good:)

Well with the money UG makes I'm sure they have it professionally done. Many people use professional lighting, shadow guards, and high power lenses to get what they need.

Posing is tough, especially with younger ones. We bought a high school science fair project board. Covered it with Black fabric and then a single piece of black fabric on the surface. With the board standing up as a background and the black piece as a bottom you shouldn't have any flash problems and their color will pop a good amount against the black. Some use white as well.

Be creative and you'll be able to get what you want out of it.

To get the poses we usually will hold them for a bit so they are calm before trying to snap off a few shots..

Thanks for the input...I'm a bit frustrated, mostly because I was a photo major in college, though not with digital...and my digital sucks! We made a light box (with full spectrum lights), so that I wouldn't have to use flash. I tried it again today and have decided that a new camera is the answer. (maybe I am just looking for an excuse!)

A DSLR works in a nearly identical way to a film based SLR. Canon and Nikon lenses even work on their respective digital bodies, although some magnification of the lens usually happens.

As for posing there is a nice trick that I picked up for field pictures of snakes. Use a nice snug hide like a plant pot or deli cup to place over the animal. This will cause snakes, and geckos, to curl up and relax. When your ready just lift up the hide and you can shoot a few pics before they dart away. I really like to use clear cups because you can see where their head is pointed and adjust for it.

I have a Canon Powershot and the pictures it takes are completely fine. I don't really know a thing about cameras but Ryan played around with it and it works perfectly.

I just bought a canan D40 DSLR it was like 550, not to much more than a good "regular" digital camera. But if you use a regular digital make sure you use the macro feature.....well, you studied photography...so you know. The canan I got is taking GREAT pics...Ill put some in the pics forum.
