Here are a few pics I took. I am using a Nikon D40 and I have a spotlight to help with the lighting but they arent turning out like some of the pics I see online. Any help would be great. I am not to smart when it comes to cameras so setting and adjustment isnt something I know.

what seems to be happening in your photos is there doesnt look like their is enough lighting for their to be a crisp exposure. On my D40x, the brighter the light source the faster the exposure and the better picture. You could go into M A or S mode on the camera and play with the aperature, but it can be tricky. The pictures themselves are fantastic, you just need to get some brighter lighting.

Taken with a bright white halogen lamp as light, A shoe box with white paper in it.

I made a lightbox out of a cardboard box and some white posterboard to line the inside. I used one of those energy saver flourescent daylight bulbs for the light. It looks like your bulb may be casting a yellow hue. Look for the daylight, not anything like warm white for the bulb. Good Luck!

Hey fellow D40 user!

You can get around the color issue by simply setting your white balance correctly. If you are using regular bulbs the tungsten WB setting should make everything come out correctly. If you're not sure if you are getting the correct colors try doing a custom WB. The best option however is to shoot in RAW and correct the WB later but you'll need software that can handle RAW files.

Your camera's user manual will also answer many of your questions and allow you to get the most out of your camera.
