A huge section of my town has lost power from the ice, and that's including a friend of mine who owns a gecko. (The only reason I still have it is because I have underground wires).

She has no temporary heat pad yet because she had just gotten the gecko not too long ago, so we're hoping it comes back on, but is there anything she can do to keep her gecko warm if the power outage is prolonged?

Would it be ok to put them in the same tank? She's not too sure of the sex yet..

And I know no one is responding.. but I really can't drive on these roads. The power went off because of an ice storm, and the roads are terrible. I'm sorry if I'm a nuisance right now, but can someone help me at all?

No I honestly wouldn't put them in the same tank. You can go to a sporting goods store and pick up some heat packs or the camping section at wal mart should have them as well. If you can't find heat packs your best bet woud be to make arrangements for her to place the leo with a friend that does have power (the leo's tank and all) until the power failure is over.

Unfortunately she really can't drive, like I said, because the roads are all ice. D: She's about sit in the car for a little while with the heat on. How long will the gecko be able last without a heating pad?

I'd stay in the house, rather than sitting in the car. Even if she has electric heating in the house, it's an easier place to find a way to control the environment.

If she doesn't have and can't go get heating packs and she hasn't got a generator or battery sufficient to run the heat pad...

And if the outage is likely to be extended...

You asked about putting her gecko in with your gecko which isn't a great idea for a few reasons but can she get to you, with the gecko and the gecko's enclosure? That way she can use your electricity without the risks of putting the animals together.

Or if it comes down to it, she does have her own body heat. Her skin temperature is sufficient to warm up, for example, a critter keeper if she tucks it someplace where that heat is allowed to build up. On her lap inside a heavy sweatshirt, or wrapped close to her inside a heavy blanket.

Ok, thank you, she's waiting until 8 (it's almost 7 here) to see if the power turns back on, and if it doesn't, she'll be trying to come here. She's going to take it out now since it's already been over an hour since the power turned off.

How cold is it there (in the house)? Does her house have a way of being heated?

I'd also suggest just her bringing the tank with her to your house, and you baby sit him. :p

Hope all goes well :)

Well the thermometer for the tank's air temperature is 69, so that's about the temperature of the house right now, and no, she has electric heat.

She'll try bringing the tank if it's still off by 8. :)

Thank you, guys.

Can she measure the floor temps in the tank? I presume the thermometer she's using is not a probe type so the temp she's getting could be a little off. What kind of substrait does she use? The floor temp could be warmer than the air temp in the tank and belly heat is what matters to her leo. Hopefully the power comes on soon or she can safely make it to you soon.

No lol, she has two thermometers, a probe and a regular one. And she's using paper towels.
The floor temp, last time she told me (which was about 45 minutes ago), was 88 on the hot side, I think.

So not horrid on the floor temp. That's good. I don't think there's too much need to worry until the floor temps get closer to the 80-ish maybe even high 70 range since the suggested cool side range is lower than that.

i have used hot water bottles before filled with kettl water but you have to make sure they arnt sitting right on or they will get burnt.
you could place the gecko in a airy plastic box and rest on the hot water bottle wrapped in a thick towel or rest the box on two big books or sumthing leaving a space inbetween them for the water bottle to sit underneath making sure it dosnt touch the bottom of the box. as you dont wont the poor love getting to hot and burning.

hope power comes back soon

Can i just mention, cooling. .... some owners who cool their gecko's turn the geckos heating off for a couple of months. and as long as the gecko has enough fat reserves then it will be fine.
i doubt the power will be off for a couple of months... so i honestly think the gecko will be fine.

I season my geckos like that for breeding but you still need a little heat (i use heat rocks) so they can digest their food properly. and if your geckos arnt used to it, its a bit of a shock for them and no heat atall makes for a very unhappy gecko

2 things, when properly coolingg the gecko's they arent supposed to be fed over the cooling period.
Also heat rocks are considered a big no no, especially if its the only sourse of heat.

Problably too late, but how about a blanket or two wrapped around the tank? Just leave a small open area on top for air to circulate. I'm sure this will keep the cold out
