I'm so sad. I just had to euthanize a 10-day old baby. It was a very weak hatchling, and he had severe MBD. I noticed he had a hard time shedding, and realized it's little legs were like rubber and could hardly walk. I was giving it liquid calcium, but he just couldn't make it. I went to check on him a little while ago, and when I picked him up he just cried and couldn't move anymore.

In my 13 years working with leopard geckos, this is only the second case of MBD I have ever had to deal with, and first time I have ever seen such a tiny one develop this devastating disease. I'm sure it was a metabolic disorder and he couldn't assimilate calcium for some reason. It's clutchmate is just fine, and all the offspring from it's parents are perfectly healthy.

Each and every one of my geckos is precious to me, and it breaks my heart to lose one. There is just still so much we don't know about these beautiful, gentle creatures...

Marcia, I am sorry for your loss. I may have to put down a gecko soon as well and it will be the first for me.
I just edited this post. I was going to ask more about the euthanization process, but after some research I found what you had written last year in a post about a couple of geckos that had to be put down.

Marcia, I am so sorry you had to go thru this. I too feel all creatures are sacred and precious and it hurts so much when I have to let one go. After putting my dog to sleep this last March. I really know what a unselfish thing it was to do. Of course I didn't want to let her go but in my heart and thru her eyes I knew we were both ready. Now I have lost two geckos that for some reason wouldn't eat. And it was very hard to lose them. Please know you did the right thing for it and we need to keep that in mind always. You are a very knowledgeable person who I have learned so much from and from this forum. I hope you never have to deal with this again. Good luck with all your little ones! Deb

oh Marcia!

I'm terribly sorry for your loss. I know how much each of your geckos means to you. I know you did everything right with this little guy, but like you say, sometimes... it is really out of our hands, there is still so much we don't know about these geckos...

sincerely,
Brittney Gougeon
