Possible Shedding Issue?

I noticed my girl was having problems shedding. She started shedding Wednesday night and was done shedding with the exception of her face last night. So I misted her hides and cage, and her (she seemed to enjoy it). This morning I checked on her again and she still had it on her face so I decided to help her out. I put her in one of those small animal carriers and put soaked paper towels in it and let her sit in it for about 10 minutes to build up the humidity. I got a Q-tip and managed to get most all of it off of her. It was weird, she crawled into my hand and actually enjoyed it, it's like we bonded :).

Anyway, it looks as though she may have rubbed her nose raw. I'm not sure if it is just skin left there or if it's just raw (I tried getting it off to a degree, but she wouldn't sit still).

Here are some pictures. Maybe someone could give me some tips. I'm letting her stay in her cage to warm back up for a while, because it took me about 2 hours to get all of the shed of that I could.

Sorry that I couldn't get many good pictures, it was hard to get one from the front to show her nose, so I had to get most from a top/side view.

First of all, beautiful gecko!

It looks to be exactly as you expect... There may be some scar tissue and she'll probably continue to have shedding problems there...

I have one with a similar problem, however, it's not just his head, but his feet as well... I tried soaking, extra moist paper towels in his hide, etc. and it didn't help... The paper towels dry up too fast and soaking really isn't a preventative measure... So I tried using Sphagnum Moss in his hide which was soaked until it won't hold anymore water... He never has stuck shed anymore!

Best of luck with her!

Thanks! She is quite the little beauty :main_thumbsup: .

I have some moss sitting around that I used to use in one of my other geckos hides, and actually have used in hers too. I took it out of hers though because one day I thought I saw her eat some of it, not sure if she really did, but it worried me. I may try it again, definitely if it helped your gecko! But I might have an issue with it, I use a gladware container with a hole cut into the side, so I am not sure if the moisture would stay in it so well because of the side hole, but I will at least give it a shot!

What should I do about the scar tissue? Will it just eventually fall off? I went in there just a minute ago to check on her and noticed some more shed on her, and got it off, so I think I've got it all off except for what's on her nose of course.

Thanks for your help!

I have also had my geckos eat bits of the moss while they were eating their shed... It concerned me quite a bit and I was told it happens from time to time and not to worry about it... So I didn't and I've never had a problem since... That's not really the greatest advice since it's like playing with fire... They could ingest too much you never know... Ahhh... Where's Marcia? :p

Thanks Michael for your help...I've put some moss in her humid hide, but I haven't seen her go in it yet, so we will see what happens there.

Anyone else have any ideas as to what I can do here? Should I take her to a vet? Or will the skin eventually fall off, like maybe with her next shed?

im having a similar problem myself. ever since i started using paper towels in my hide box ive noticed how much more i have to monitor them. 1 litlle guy even pulled his shed off his nose too soon and made a little boo boo. i have been putting neosporin on it but i miss using loose substrate. only problem was, that specific gecko was eating it and i saw it in his poo. so now im trying eco earth cause i dont think dirt will be very tasty:)

reading in the heath and medicine forum, i read about a shedding issue that looked very similar. the person took the leo to the vet and the vet recommended Silvadine cream. they said it is mostly exclusive at vets that will look at exotics. it is a burn cream but can be used for shedding issues like your leos. hope this can help some..

ps. great looking gecko by the way

If she just shed it shouldn't be a problem to get some tweezers and pull it off. We've done this many times and waiting only makes it worse. You might want to try and get a Q-tip and apply some water and that will moisten it up so that it will be easier to take off.

I use the paper towels in my humid hides. I just use plasic bowls with lids such as Cool whip containers. I check the paper towels every day so I never had a problem with it drying out too fast. Also those Blue Shop towels that you can buy at Kragan, Napa Auto Parts, ect hold water better. I have used both with no probs. But I spend the time checking hides as a way to make sure all have food, clean water, spot cleaning ect.
