Hi all,
Roughly six weeks ago I noticed my female leo's eye shut the day after a shed. I was able to determine a piece of shed was stuck in the eye and was able to work it out with saline solution and a q-tip gently. It was a fairly large piece and she certainly seemed happy to have it out, but kept her eye shut.
She still wouldn't open her eye, and it continued to appear cloudy so I took her to the vet. The vet proceeded to do a thorough check up of her and the good news is she appears healthy with a nice fat tail and pupils which were functioning properly. He prescribed Gentamicin in case of an infection.
I began giving her drops that day and she shed roughly 2 weeks after the drops started. The shed was really weird - it did cover her full body but was very flakey/thin and she was having a heck of a time getting it off, and for some reason not biting it like she normally does.
She was able (after 2 days) to get most of it off, leaving just her head full of shed. I decided to help her work it off very gently through warm soaks and such.
After that shed, I noticed she now had both eyes shut and the previous good eye was now swollen a bit. I had feared she may have gotten something stuck in there again, or the combination of me helping her may have irritated her eye.
So, I began putting the gentamicin in both eyes just to be safe and finish off the bottle.
Here we are six weeks later and her eyes are still not healed, though the swelling is gone. She will open them if I take her out of her cage and soak her and her pupils function properly still thankfully.
However, she began shedding yesterday and only her feet and upper back have shed. It's really strange!
Pounce hasn't eaten in 2 months, but she has done that before. She seems to have periods where she goes 3 months or so without eating. Her tail is still nice and fat and she is active with energy.
I am thinking the medication and/or lack of vitamins is contributing to the bad shed.
Anyone ever seen anything like this?
