Probably going to lose my first leo tonight. :(

My female leo started losing a little weight a while back but it was not enough to be too concerned about. She had just dropped a couple eggs about a month ago and she had been eating pretty well and gaining it back until late last week....then she stopped eating but was still pretty active. She's done this before so I was not overly concerned (plus she ate 3 super worms one day early last week) but then today I came home from work and she is totally limp and not opening her eyes.

I have no idea what's wrong with her. She is in a 20 gal long with slate on the bottom and a under tank heater (yes it's working). 3 hides, 1 with damp paper towels and a small bowel of calcium (no d3).

She is only 2 years old so age should not be the issue.

This stinks....I have had a lot of lizards in my time and have never lost one. Eats me up thinking it could be something I might have done.

I do not think she will make it through the night from what I'm seeing.

Well as I figured she passed away about an hour or two after I posted this. I went to check on her in the middle of the night and she was gone.

What's strange is that she developed a dark spot on her belly (in the center about 1/3 the way down from her neck to base of tail) a long time ago and when she passed away it got really large and a lot darker. I looked at it probably 6 months ago then compared it to pictures online and really did not see anything abnormal. Also she was eating and passing her food with no problems. I figured it was just her insides but it clearly had something to do with her death because it got pretty large and a whole lot darker when she died. It could have been a partial block I guess but I have no idea what could have impacted her because she's been on slate tile almost her entire life.

At least she's not hurting anymore but I feel terrible about it.

The dark spot might not have anything to do with the reason she died. I can't remember where I saw it, but I recall something about the darkened belly being part of the after-death processes that occur as the body starts to break down.

hmmm...I wonder if she was egg bound. She was carrying one when she passed but I really did not think that would have been the issue. She just dropped a couple eggs 2 or 3 weeks ago.

It's possible she was egg-bound, or even an egg had burst inside her. Someone posted about their gecko passing away due to an egg bursting inside their gecko just recently. It's a risk you take when breeding your geckos, things like this can happen.

I think this is probably what happened. In fact she was in her moist hind yesterday when I got home and there was like a glob of mucus inside. I thought it might just be passing a strange stool or something due to her not eating or something like that.

I'm done with females I think...I have one solo male and I think he's going to stay single. I don't like seeing them suffer. What's worse is she was incredibly friendly and passive. So very disappointed she passed. I was up most the night wondering what happened to her...

This was her:

I'm a new leo owner so I don't have much knowledge on what might have caused what happened, but I just wanted to say I am so sorry for your loss :( She was a very pretty girl. It breaks my heart when geckos with lovely little personalities pass before their time :(

Thanks.

She did not have the best color or patterns or whatever else but she really was a sweet little girl and that's why it has bothered me so much. But I don't think she was in pain for long...it was not a long process so I am thankful for that.

Im so sorry to hear she passed, I know exactly how you feel. the same thing happend to me last week and yours sounds exactly the same as mine. my female had an egg rupture from the ovi duct into the abdomen, she also had globs of mucus.
