Was puttering around the gecko room taking pictures of and putting away the new leos that just arrived into their new homes when I caught a glimpse of something in one of the other racks.
My gorgeous TUG line raptor male (who is temporarily housed with a giant aptor female for breeding) was "taking care of business". I hurriedly turned my camera on them and caught the whole courtship and mating in succession. Smiling and thinking it was a great day for pictures I went back to the others.
It's now three hours later and I went in to check on the new kids and make sure they were settling in okay. Everyone looked happy and I decided that while I was in there I should go ahead and pull the aptor female out of the raptor's tank and put her back into her own. As I was reaching in to lift her out the raptor gave me a profile shot of his tail and I caught site of his hemipene still exposed. Hmmm, not good.
Obviously they could have just "done the dirty" again, but it got me thinking about prolapses and everything that I've been reading about on here. I'll be watching him closely now that his girlfriend is gone, but if this does turn out to be my first prolapse I want to get some info before I start panicking.
Why use sugar water baths rather than salt water (saline) baths? Is there something in the sugar or karo syrup that helps that specific area? It seems that saline would be more natural and soothing to irritated tissues. I'm a contact wearer, so I know how nice it feels to rinse my eyes out with saline if I get even a tiny speck of dust in them.
I'll be keeping a close eye on my boy to make sure everything goes back to where it's supposed to be, but in the meantime I'd love to hear some opinions on the bath water of choice.
