I was hoping someone on here could tell me a supplier for PVC board to make racks. Or, if anyone knows the average price for a 48x96 sheet?

Thanks for your help.

found a local place

I found a local place, they have it in 1/4 inch thickness for $78. Not sure where that is in the mL range. I'll have to check it out. I am going to guess that 3mL is thinner then 1/4 inch and I was wondering how you would build it if it is that thin?

Thanks for the replies.

plastic weld would probably do the trick since its too thin for screwing. 1/4" is roughly 6mm if you wanted to compare.

thanks

Thanks for that. You saved me some time googling it :) I was worried about using plastic weld in case I had to take the rack down to move it or something. Hmmm...

6mm is usually about $40 and 12mm $78 are you sure you got the 6mm?

Plastic weld or Ive heard some use super glue, either way once its up its up not taking it apart unless you are reallyy good witha razor blade.

I had some 18x24 3mm and it did fine with that width and a back support. I sodl that rack but Ill see if the guy still has it so I can take a picture.

It'll be REALLY light if you use pvc foamboard though so taking it apart to move shouldnt be a big concern unless its the actual dimensions that are too big for your transporting.

which type

Is this PVC the same type of stuff that Boaphile or the other builders use? I am a bit lost at calling it foam board, as it sounds like the wavy plastic board used for road side signs. Thanks for all your help.

Hate to start this up again but, how much weight will these things hold? I need to build a hatchling rack soon, but I don't know how big to make it.

The XPVC boards go by a number of names including Komatex, Sintra and a few others. I built these racks using 1/4 and 1/2 XPVC, same material as Boaphile and other cage companies use.

As for how much weight each shelf could hold, I'm not sure. I've placed I would estimate 6-8lbs of snakes on the shelves using the 1/4" sheets and have had no signs of stress at all. I placed 15lbs boas in the larger CB110 tubs using the 1/2" sheets while cleaning out the larger cages and it had no problems at all.

The 1/4 thickness is assembled using clamps and chemical adhesive (glue) and you can use small screws for added strength if you'd like. The 1/2 thickness can be screwed together and you can also use a chemical adhesive. On the weight of the sheets, the 1/4" weighs about 15-20lbs and the 1/2" I believe is twice that being 30-40lbs.

The material is very simple to work with! No special tools required and most suppliers will gladly cut the sheets for you down to your specs.

Wow! Thats awesome! I am definitely doing my hatchling rack with that. Where did you get yours from? I thought it would be like those foam boards you get at walmart. Thats really cool! What kind of screws did you use? What kind of glues?

Here are a few Plastic suppliers that have multiple locations throughout the US, check for anyone local to you. Just ask around your local area for a Plastic supplier and ask for Sintra or Komatex.

Here is one of the types of chemical welds (glue).

You are also not limited to XPVC, you can also use HDPE (High density polyethylene). Which is much harder plastic. A bit more expensive than XPVC, it also weighs more, almost as much as Melamine. HDPE used by some cage companies, I believe AP used to use HDPE. It's the stuff those hard cutting boards in kitchens are made of. For a rack to stack tubs on, I prefer XPVC...

Yeah I was planning to build a hatchling rack from 1/4 inch. Ive never seen the black though...I like it best.

The sheets come in black, white, gray, red, blue, yellow and some others. The 1/4 works fine and can be found for $30-$55 a sheet. The 1/2 sheets are about $85-$110 a sheet. Shop around, I'm sure you'll find someone within driving distance that will have it.
