Hello everyone! I am new here, great forum!

I am thinking about getting a python, but I have been hearing rumors about bans and stuff. Is this true? Anything to worry about?

Thanks!

long story short. it depends on what you want. if you have never had a python and looking to get your first..... anything on the list that could get banned is anything you should start out with. balls, carpets, childrens, womas, and several others are small. you need to stay away from burms, retics, or rocks as your first snakes.

they arent trying to ban all pythons they are trying to ban the big 5 snakes excluding anacondas which are burmese pythons, reticulated pythons (think thats the name) idian rock pythons i think its called and i forgot the other one and they are banning them because a girl got killed by a burmese that some stupid owner let loose. for your first python i suggest getting a ball python. and honestly i just feel like ranting lol so im gunna say my views on the bill trying to be passed. i doubt itll be passed but i dont think we should fight it like everyone is saying i think we should compromise. i think that there should be some type of permit to owning a big snake so only true experienced herpers can get them and not the idiots that just get them because they think they are cool and dont have a clue about what they are doing with them.

The "Big Five" are:
Burmese Pythons
Reticulated Pythons
African Rock Pythons (Afrocks for short)
Amethystine Pythons (Scrubs)
and Anacondas

Pretty much all the giant species.

Those are the ones that are heavily permited... so far.
But there is alot of other wonderful species of pythons that make great beginner snakes. Check with your state's Fish & Wildlife and they should be able to supply you with what is and isn't acceptable, etc.

is it all anacondas or just green anacondas? as far as snakes go i know absolutely nothing about anacondas other then that they are the second longest snake and the largest in terms of girth but those are green anacondas. to my understanding there are 2 other species of anaconda?

The licensing is for all anaconda species. So far they're the only boa species on the list (and lets hope it stays that way). So both yellow and green annies would have to be licensed. I've seen some interesting ones that were the result of controled line breeding, but I haven't had the opportunity to work with annies yet so I'm not sure how many other species there might be.
