Quarantine specifics

Hi all!

My new girl will (weather permitting) be arriving next Wednesday and I wanted to make sure I understand the quarantine issues.

To start, the leos will be housed in different areas of the house; my daughter's leo is in her room upstairs and my new girl, will be downstairs in the family room near my computer desk...grin.

Okay, quarantine last for 90days? And how exactly does it work? We currently have the cricket container up in my daughter's room near her leo. Should I have a separate container for the crickets for my new girl downstairs? I assume it wouldn't be safe to use the crickets from the room where my daughter's leo is kept? If I don't take the mealworm containers into my daughter's room but just take the mealworms, would that be safe enough or am I being too careful?

I guess what I am trying to ask is what is involved in quarantining? no contact of leos or any of their stuff/food for 90 days?

Thanks in advance!

90 days is a good amount of time to keep them apart. As far as crickets go, I would say you can still use those crickets IF you have never put uneaten crickets from the first tank back into the cricket container. I would also from now on maybe keep the crickets somewhere else to be safe. The mealworms will be fine. That should be about it...

I really don't think keeping the crickets in the room will be a problem. Like said above, as long as you're not throwing uneaten feeders back into the bins that'll be fine. After taking care of one gecko just wash your hands really well before moving onto the next. Anything you use for both geckos (feeders, tweezers, etc) should be cleaned after each use for 90 days.

Kathy, as long as your new gecko is housed by itself and all the furniture items, water bowl, hides, feeders, etc. stay in that individual enclosure, there should be no problem keeping it in the same room as your other gecko. No matter who you get the gecko from (even me), I recommend 90 days before introducing your new gecko to any others.

Thanks Golden Gate Geckos! I didn't know they could be introduced to each other?! I figured since there is such a difference in size that they would always need to be kept separate...as for the separate rooms, that's because my daughter wants HER gecko in HER room! <VBG!> I want my gecko down where I can see her and not have to be in Steph's room!

I have dumped crickets from Jackie's cage back into the cricket enclosure, but now that I have a better idea of how much she will eat I don't have to do that any more. I also rotate the mealworms after 24 hrs so they can gutload again, so I guess they won't be able to share meal worms either...the mealworms can be labelled and I will just put a few crickets in and make sure they are all gone. If they are still hungry I will a couple more until they are full so I don't put any back in the cricket cage.

I warned you guys I ask alot of questions! <grin> I know I have much to learn!

Thank you very much!

DUHHHH! Why didn't I think of that? Excellent idea! Do you have calcium in with the mealworms as well? Jackie has a cap of pure calcium and I leave calcium dust on the mealworms...should I continue with the calcium on the mealworms with the gutload? Is it okay if Jackie eats a little gutload when she eats the mealworms?

Thanks!

That's fine. It gets into her system at some point anyway. You can mix some calcium in there if you want. They kinda roll themselves in it so they get coated with it. It's kinda nice.

Thanks very much! What gutload do you use? I have ESU Gut Load and it seemed pretty chunky with corn and other stuff. I wasn't sure if it would cause Jackie problems with impaction since it's kinda large chunks...

Thanks,

I would not recomend housing them together, especially now that we know 'Jackie' is porabably 'Jack'... unless sometime in the future you planned on breeding them! Eventually, they will be much closer in size.

Thank you! I checked out the link; the gutload sounds excellent! Plus I found some other stuff available like the heat packs and hexachlorine (sp?)...have you used the cleaner?

Thanks again!

curiousKathy

I don't use that. I am actually not sure what is best to use for that. I am sure Marcia (Golden Gate Geckos) could help you out.
