I am going to be getting a leopard gecko soon and I am wanting to get a exo terra terrarium.
The question is ++++++++ has a 36x18x18 for 89.95 on sale, will this be to big for one gecko ,what I was worried about is the height with the heat lamps on top will the heat get to him from that high or should I get a 12 inch tall one.I would like to get the 36x18x18 because its on sale but I want what will be best for the leo

To be clear, you're talking about this, right?

That's a 50 gallon, which would be too large for a juvenile leo. However, I know of people keeping their adults in 40 gallon breeders, which appear to have the same amount of floor space (36") as this 50 gallon does. It's just slightly taller and deeper. So taking that into consideration, I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem. If you're planning to get a juvenile, you'll initially need something smaller (a cheap 10 gallon aquarium would work fine). I'm not very familiar with these setups, so I'll let someone else give a better response. Just wanted to be clear about exactly what you were talking about so people could give better advice. :)

You need belly heat from an under tank heater for digestion, heat lamps are not needed unless your temps fall below 70 degrees in your house. You need a floor surface temp of 89-95 degrees. Measure with either a probe thermometer or temp gun. Also a lamp dimmer or thermostat to control the under tank heater.

I know this is an old post, but i have been looking into getting an exo terra terrarium for each of my leopard geckos to minimize the amount of space they take up in my new apartment, but also to maximize the floor space for the geckos. The exo terra 24x18x12 actually has more floor space than a 30x12x12 20 gallon long tank. I didn't believe it until I did the math lol. So the 24x18 would be ideal for one leopard gecko. For two you would want the 36x18x18 tank. This is for adults obviously. As for heating the 36x18x18, a 16watt uth (with a thermostat) and a 50watt day glo bulb will keep the temps ideal during the day. I don't like using night lights since they are inefficient, expensive, and unessesary especially since intemperatures drop drastically at night in their natural environment, but if it gets cold in your house/apt a 50 night glo should do the trick.

I do know this is old but a word of WARNING: The screen tops are terrible if you have cats. I have had two of them ruined from a cat jumping on top of it and the screen popping out. Unless you can guarantee your cat will never get on you tank, I suggest going with a standard aquarium/terrarium with a metal screen lid. These have cheaply attached mesh screen lids held in by rubber hose and aren't replaceable due to the terrariums off sizes. :-(
