Question for those who use tile substrates . .

Do you lay the tile directly on the bottom of the tank or do you have to put sand down first? How often do you take it all out to sterilize? I've got carpet now which I don't mind but I like the look of tile. And I'll bet it cleans up very easily--like with calcium spills, etc.

I prefer to have some sand beneath the tile; makes the heat more evenly distributed. If you spot clean everyday, I think you don't need to sterilize very often. I do the big clean once every 2 months.

Thanks Bonnie,

What type of sand do you use? How think of a layer? Does it come up thru the cracks?

I just put my tile straight onto the bottom of the tank.
I wipe it clean when needed.
