I got my Leopard Gecko's yesterday & all the things i needed, but i couldn't get any calcium, now i went out to get some today, i went to 2 shops, i hadn't got any, & the second shop said if i had Nutrabol i didn't need it as it was in the nutrabol. Now i have read in a book on Leo's that i need it in a small dish for them & also on this group, so until i can find some, will it matter?? I am feeding the crickets & when the gecko's eat, i will dust them with the nutrabol.

if you use a variety of feeders such as crickets, mealworms, superworms, waxworms, phoenix worms etc. then a calcium powder isnt really needed. Calcium suppliment should definately be used if you are breeding your gecko to ensure your female geckos health. However a variety of feeders would be sufficient instead of a calcium powder supplement.

Say it ain't so Joe.

I am a Noob, a Newbie, the kid on the block, the new guy at school or work or in the park.

And I have only two Leos and I only have been doing this for a few months.

So I don't know nothin from nothin.

But, I have to say "Say it ain't so Joe."

I have read several books and book learning is book learning but, there is always something in the darn books that when matched with common sense makes sense.

In the short term, when you are out of calcium, you do not need to worry.

In the long term, over the life of the Leo, then you need to worry.

Even with Gutloading your feeder insects, with calcium, your Leo needs more.

Insects have Phorpous (spelling) and they do have calcium but, not in the proper porportions. You add calcium to increase the porportions.

Calcium builds strong bones. Haven't you heard of WonderBread?

A Lizard or a Leo needs the Calcium to maintain its bone structure and to grow. Then the amount of Calcium that is needed depends on the age of your Gecko as young ones need a lot and older ones need some and breeding ones need a lot.

Now you also have to consider Vitamins.

So here is what you do ... don't stress and to make your life simple ... go on the internet and do a search for Reptile Supplements and read about Calcium.

Then, you can if you want go to GeckoRanch.com and read about Rapsady Supplement.

I do not use it yet but, I will after I finish off what I have.

You can also Search this forum and see about Calcium, or you can PM the sponsers of this website and ask them or you can PM Gecko Ranch or Julie.

I hope this helps.

But, from what I have read and I have read 5 or 6 or 7 books and I just finished one on Parasites, I would have to say "Say it ain't so Joe.":D

Good Luck.:main_thumbsup:

Thanks for that but i know i need it, just can't find it in the shops & i live in England so don't want to get it from your neck of the woods, but thanks for all the info.
I will keep looking & can go to another place but it is about 30miles away, I will possibly go tomorrow, it is a nice place but i don't like the staff.

I'm not sure if this is the same product, but I have been using Nutrobal for years for my adult Beardie and both my adult leos with no problems. The hatchlings do get calcium, but Nutrobal contains calcium and D3, so additional supplementation of this as adults would seem unnecessary.

As I say, this might not be the same product.

The way i have heard it is they need nutrabol to dust their crickets or mealworms & calcium to put in a little dish in the viv, they lick it when they need it, but thanks.

As added insurance

As added insurance you would put Calcium in the bowl, just in case they need it.

You dust so that they get it.

But, sometimes they want it and they will eat sand substrate to satisify the desire for calcium.

You could do without but, for complete care for the Leo you would want to provide it.:main_thumbsup:

Marg, you can buy calcium from LivefoodsUK, thats where I get mine.

I leave that in dishes for hatchlings. Adults just get the Nutrobal.
