If you're talking about sand as a "natural environment", from personal experience I would just avoid it all together. After doing all sorts of research between this forum and the rest of the interweb, I had decided to try it, and don't get me wrong, Fred loved it. He was digging all around in it and even dug out his cave so it was closer to the heat mat. Until I noticed his BM's were pretty much all sand and he was ignoring his giant mealworms (which he normally comes running at the sound of the dinner bell for). Within a day of noticing, which was a total of three days, I switched the floor to slate. I had some old stuff laying around that I washed up and chiseled out to fit, and layed it out right on top of the sand and it works excellent. It's a week since I changed it and Fred is having normal BM's (as normal as it gets with mainly reptiboost) but he's coming back around. So yeah, like I said, personal experience, don't do sand! No matter what you hear! My little guy was like the kid in the corner eating glue! And it wasn't even calcium sand! Plus the slate is definitely more aesthetically pleasing. Just saying.
