Questions about food

I have a few questions. How often should you feed your geckos? I've heard some different opinions before (once a week, once a day?). What is the best thing to keep crickets in, where is the best place to store them without having to smell them, and what should I use to gut load them? Also, I have heard some people talking about roaches as feeders. Any idea where I could get these? Thanx :grin2:

The young geckos you can feed everyday, when they get older (near adult), you can feed them every 2 to 3 days. About crickets, I hate crickets and I think roaches are soooooo much better. You should try the non-climbers, they're easier to deal with.

I feed all my geckos almost every day except Tuesdays and once every other week I skip a day or two. Most of my geckos won't eat every day anyway, so I try to feed them, if they won't have it, I skip them. But really I don't think going 2-3 times a week would really matter too much for an adult, they'd just eat more cause they would obviously be hungrier *shrugs*

I feed mostly mealies and supers to mine. Occasionally I get a finicky eater and I'll get crix for them, but I don't keep crix because they are retarded and die too easily.
Well for keeping your crix you could get one of those big plastic bins they carry and your local Walmart (like the Rubbermaid ones for like 40 or 50 gallons or so). It's easier to clean than a glass cage but the smaller ones can actually climb up the sides for some reason so I don't know if different plastic types would have an affect on that.
As for the smell, umm, to lower that smell you have to clean out your cricket enclosure every so often. Otherwise you'd just have to put it some place where it doesn't get too hot so you don't have to smell them. That's one of the reasons I don't use crix anymore, stinky little buggers that die too easily.

As for gutloading there are probably some gutloading things you can find at your local store or someone can suggest a concoction you can make yourself. For moisture use carrots or potatoes. They munch through them pretty quick, but it's cheap.

Hope that helps.

for gutload I use Cricket Yummies for ectotherm, they're fortifies with 37 vitamins, minerals and amino acids and are also moist so you don't need to give them water or a potato or anything like that, I like them and so do the crickets, lol.

because of my beardie i have to keep crickets around :( BUT i do use flukers orange cubs, which keep the crickets alive longer, and kind of gutloads them. As for storage, ive got a nice little plastic container with two black tubes. I keep the container in a dark drawer, then when i pull it out into the sunlight the crickets scatter into the tubs, and thus its easy to knock them into the tank.

You can usually find all of this stuff at a petstore.

I feed babies up to 20 grams every day, juvies up to 30 grams are fed every other day, and full-grown adults every 2-3 days. I keep mealies for them at all times, and feed crickets, supers, and silkworms. Crickets are disgusting and smelly, so you do have to keep their enclosures clean and free of dead ones in order to keep the bacteria down. I make my own gutload from human grade products like bulk 10-grain cereal mixed with oatmeal and about 5-10% Vionate, which is also used as the mealworm bedding. I use water pillows for my crickets, and fresh produce like squash, carrots, sweet potatoes, and collard greens for all of my feeders except the silkies.
