Quick and dirty rack

Has anyone tried to convert one of these $40 presswood bookcases into a backheated shoebox rack? It seems like 3 11 inch strips of heat tape hung vertically would give you a fair gradient and coverage.

The way the season is shaping up I'll need 75 or so shoe boxes..... any ideas appreciated.
