Rack Questions?

How do snake racks work? They seem...confusing for me not knowing anything about them.

I feel like they would be too small for the snakes to be happy and heathy.

Is this true?

How do you heat them?

Any additional info would be nice!

Thanks everyone:main_thumbsup:

They aren't too small if you use big enough tubs for the animals you are housing. :) Heat is usually provided by Flexwatt heat tape.

For a gecko rack how big of a gap should be between the tub and the shelf? For my hatchling rack I put a thin piece of cardboard over the tubs before the shelf to use a spacer.

thermostat or rheostat? I've heard both from different people and what kind of tubs would be good to use for snakes such as king, milk, corn, or hognose younger than two years.

Thanks for all your help by the way =]

Ok well depending on the species your keeping you may need different sized tubs and you heat with flex wat and you should hook up the flex wat to a rheostat or a thermostat to keep the temps controled and racks are made if you breed are going to breed or have many animals in a limnted space

Thermostats are worth the extra money, a rheostat will allow the temperature of the heat tape to fluctuate along with the room temperature. Rheostats are really only useful if the room temperature is very stable, but the difference in price is usually $25 or less, and your herp collection in the rack is going to be worth way more than that, why risk it? I'm not really a colubrid guy, so I'm not sure what tub size is customary for them. Shoot a PM to Gregg M, he works with a lot of hogs and should be able to steer you in the right direction.
