Is the the red stripe in a RRS a line-bred trait or a recessive? And......If it is line-bred and you were to break the stripe by breeding to a non RRS how many generations would it take to get the stripe to line back up? Breeding to hets and breeding back to the RRS?

I have talked to Jeremy about this before, and he can confirm this once he catches this thread, but he was telling me that it is acting like a recessive trait for him.

I have talked to other breeders about getting the red stripe back where it's more prominent. I have suggested using a bold stripe (assuming it is also recessive) to cross into them. Granted, this will create RW 'hets', but the bold stripe should be there. Cross the hets or breed them back to a RRS parent, and see what happens!

Hey...

That makes sense... :) I wonder about the bold stripes, and how the genes work. I would be very interested to see one crossed to a RRS... :)

Well that opens another can of worms. How easy does the bold stripe come together when breeding to a non boldstripe and then putting the "hets" back together?

oh Wow... Thats a good looking gecko... Breeding it back to a RRS would be a cool project! :)

Paul, do you have images of that geckos parents?? :)

outta my freakin mind
The raining red stripe acts in two different ways. The albino trait is obviously simple recessive. The red stripe is line bred. The striping does act recessive. I am not saying it is... just that it acts that way.

I have crossed every type of stripe that I have into my RRS now. The striping is very difficult to produce consistently. This year I have, red stripes, dorsal stripes, bold stripes and reverse stripes that are all het for RW (RRS). I will have much more info at the end of this season.

Oh and James, to answer your question, I have reproduced the stripe in the first generation of outcrossing. Yet at the same time, some third generation geckos have exhibited banding? So, like I said it is a little tricky. The majority of the animals follow the normal expectations, then there are the few that really make you think.

When you have crossed the RRS to a non RRS and non stripe of any kind for that matter, when the hets are bred together do some RRS pop up or do you have to go back to a RRS for that to happen easily?

Paul, have you tried breeding those RS hets to see how the 2nd generation turns out?
No, these are the first generation of outcrossing (they're not a year old yet) and unfortunately I won't be keeping the project.
