Hi everyone, I am a fan of Gecko from Beijing, China. I have been noticing this forum for quite a long time. I have a question here. Is there still such a concept of Giant Gecko came up by Tremper existing?? Or only Direct descent count as Giant??
When an animal reaches the 100 grams (male) in the first year of its life, it is considered a giant. For females it's 90 grams. The gene is considered to be co-dominant. This means that a heterzygous animal shows the trait (giant) and that a homozygous animal shows the trait extra (super giant).
It is possible for a non-giant to reach 100 grams in it's first year. Length of the gecko tends to be over looked. Giants are 10" plus in length. Again there are normal leos that can get up to 10" but to surpass that is very odd.
The giant gene is considered to be co-dom, and RT said that it was a random genetic mutation. However just because an animal is giant size doesn’t mean that it is a giant. Giant leopard geckos are genetically predisposed to be larger as RT says. However some believe that this trait is just due to line breeding, and some line breed traits do act co-dom, such as the hypo gene, so that is also possible. So some would consider a gecko that is in the giant, super giant size range to be super giant, or giant, even though it doesn’t have the actually giant gene blood. I really don’t know how the gene came up for real. It could be line breed, or a random genetic mutation. Here are two links on RT site (the founder of the giant leopard gecko) that may help you more. http://www.leopardgecko.com/giantfaq.html http://www.leopardgecko.com/giantgenetics.html
No, we have a male that was over 100 grams by one year of age (just last February) and has since grown to be nearly 120 grams, and we are 99% sure he isn't a Giant.. he is, however, producing some larger than average babies :main_yes: The gecko in my avatar was only 6 weeks old when the pic was taken, and he is already the size of an average 3-month-old gecko (22.2 grams). He was also 13.8 grams at 4 weeks old, and Moose was 14 grams at 4 weeks old. Growing weights can vary, but I believe this guy (and another that's just as big as him, his clutchamte) are going to be just as big as daddy  We will be able to confirm it once they are 1 year old, as we are keeping them both.
the link will take you to page 2, where I posted a pic of our male, and others posted pics of actual Giants and large non-Giants. As you can see, our male is just BIG, not BIG and LANKY like Giants are. And then if you keep reading, you may find some answers to more questions that you may have
If you have ANY questions or anything, just feel free to PM me.
giants are not just big in weight but in size thay are larger and longer. some people think thay have a giant cause thair gecko is over 100 grams but that is not the case take a look at some of rons pictures with a super giant and a normal at the same age you can see a huge dfference it's in the genes
